Have I found Variegation on my wild cross at F1 or is this some kind of disease?
JBVariegrande x Eshbaughnasii F1.
I'll be isolating this branch just in case its different.

in combination with the variegation I'm a bit worried about the malformed leaves, if there are no insects causing them I hope it's not a VLS

(BTW, great job with all those interspecific crosses!)

I can't see any pests. There were alot of aphids earlier in the season, but there almost disappeared with the predators.
First time I've heard of VLS, I need to read up on that, but first readings, you could be right.
I'm guessing it doesn't spread as its a syndrome rather that disease?
Is there anything I should be doing for it?
Thanks for the support on the crosses.

yes VLS should not spread, but it can repeat in the progeny. I thought about VLS because it happens in some directions of interspecific crosses (e.g. C. chinense x C. annuum), but these are just hypotheses as there is no documentation on these pioneering ones.
If instead it were a virus (e.g. a type of mosaic virus, or tobacco etch virus, have a look) it can be transmitted to other plants by aphids, in this case it is better to eliminate the plants. In your case, when in doubt I would at least isolate the plant, to see how it evolves, hoping it is just a variegation.

I am also curious to see if some of your variegations are transmitted in F1 or F2 since I am trying something similar. In any case I think that, on the same plant, the DNA of a non-variegated branch is identical to that of a variegated branch, so it may not be necessary to isolate it (you could plant in the same way seeds of isolated self-pollinated fruits from both types of branches).

Not sure that that is good news, because then it could very well be a virus and there is no way to get rid of it and it might spread to your other plants. It is common that parts of the plant (or even whole plants) look fine, even when infected. Many viruses also spread via seeds...

Ok, I'll just have to see what happens. Monitor them closely.
