Sawyer '15 - Killing frost 11/22 + pics

Edit 03/09/15 - This OP was such a mess with multiple lists, Old Seed, New Seed, Saved Seed, Gifted Seed, etc., I'm redoing almost the whole post.  All of the lists have been merged into a single mega-list.  I am actually trying to grow at least two or three plants of almost everything on this list.  For those marked with a leading (x), I am currently out of stock of seed (though may have OW plants).  Those marked with a leading "*" are not currently planned to be grown in 2015.  Trailing numbers refer to the seed source, keyed at the bottom of the list.  The sourcing information is currently incomplete.  Many varieties I had linked to descriptions, but the formatting didn't survive the copy/paste.  I'll try to fix that at some point.  I also tried to arrange this list into 3 columns, but couldn't figure out how to do it here.

Though I only planted out fewer than a third of the seedlings I started last year, I did manage to keep almost all of the remaining 600+ unplanted ones alive all year, in the original germination flats, root-bound, stunted, unhappy, often standing in water for days at a time, but alive nonetheless.  My plan was to bring them in and overwinter them this winter in the south room intermediate (between germination and plant-out) plant stand.  This would significantly reduce my seed-starting requirements for this season.  Alas, within two or three days of bringing them in, some critter (I assume a rat, it's almost always a rat) found it's way into the room and mowed them all down.  I'd also brought in a white cherry tomato and 5 or 6 Manzanos in 3-gal pots.  It got them, too, including all the pods on one of the Manzanos I was hoping would ripen inside.  The tomato subsequently died, as did 2 or 3 of the Manzanos.  Two or three of them are hanging on.  It also killed one of my most prized house plants.  After tripping a trap twice without getting caught, and then becoming wary, I finally put out poison.  I hated doing it, one, because it seems cruel, but also because I have foxes, owls and hawks around here and I'd hate to secondarily poison one of them.  (I'm hoping it died under the house and will desiccate before things warm up in the spring.)   In any case, the problem seems resolved for now.

After that happened, I was so down about it all, I didn't keep up with the watering and while many of the seedlings tried to sprout out and recover, I let them dry out and that is what finally killed them.  Still, I have managed to keep a few alive, so if I can continue to keep them alive, I have these to start with this year, in no particular order (number of plants in parentheses):

7 Pot Peach (3)
7 Pot Brown Naga-type (3)

For those interested, my 2013 Glog can be found here, and the 2014 Glog can be found here

You can see a picture of my germination setup in this post, and a closer shot of it plus a shot of the secondary growth station in this post.  The most recent germination numbers for this year can be found in this post.

My technique is crude and targeted for medium-large quantities of seeds and plants.  I don't soak seeds; they get planted directly into a moist soilless mix in 72-cell inserts in standard 1020 nursery flats.  Sometimes I use Fafard 3B germination mix, but this year I am using recycled Sunshine #1 mixed 3.8 cu.ft. to 3.0 cu.ft. pine bark mulch.  I keep everything watered with a dilute mix of Peter's 10-20-30 water soluble fertilizer.  Germinating flats are kept on heater pads and I try to keep the temperature at 82ºF.  In fact, it winds up fluctuating from day to night (lights on and off) and as the temperature fluctuates outside.  I actually have begun to believe a fluctuating temperature is better than a fixed temperature.

The light in the germination stand is provided by three 2-bulb T12 shop lights on each level.  The bulbs are a mixture of color temperatures.  The fixtures and bulbs are getting old and the lumen output has dropped below what I consider acceptable.  I'll likely replace them soon (next year for sure, maybe sooner) with an equal number of T8s.  In the longer run, I'm designing LED lighting for the space.  Right now, the secondary growth stand doesn't have any supplemental lighting except for a couple of CFLs in reflector clamp lamps.  Most of the light comes from the south-facing picture window.  That's not really sufficient, but it does work.  It all works well enough for me for now (knock on wood).

Looks like most everything coming along best of luck in all your endeavor's

Hey, Jason, I'm going ahead and sending you some AR Reaper seeds.  They are only a year old and they look fine, so I don't know why none have germinated yet.  You can try them and we'll hope for the best.

Thanks you John for your generosity & kindness I hope you get some AR Reaper's this year! :
I know how it can be too well only 5 of Judys peach bhut Jolokis selected strain popped there doing will & I am happy with the 5 going to give one to a pastor friend in late may coming up for my class reunion.
If I have enough of your AR Reaper I will give him one of those as well as he has been interested in the Carolina Reaper for a long time.
I will be sure to tell him where I got it form etc

John, I got some decent pods from the AK Reaper last season.
I'd be happy to send you some just to diversify the gene pool.

I didn't grow them this season, but may add them next.  I think
my neighbor is.

Jason, regarding AR Reaper seeds, I put a passel in a parcel for you today.  Hopefully some of them will germinate.  If not, maybe I can pass on some from Paul.  Do you need some CR for you friend, or does he already have those?

Edit:  What's the deal with the BJ Peach Select?  I got some BJ Peach from Judy as a freebie in a previous order, but there wasn't any indication of "select".  I wonder how they differ.  The ones I got have germinated 7 of 9.  (Hah!  Seven of nine.  Get it?)

Paul, did the pods you got look more or less like those in the picture up above?  (My apologies if I should already know the answer to this question.)  If so, I'd love to get some seeds from you.  I have no idea what I did to "kill" my seeds.  (Still holding out hope.)  Let me know if you need some postage, or want anything from my list.

John my friend doesn't have any CR 's but I will just give him a plant if I get any to germinate.
The best I can figure out on the bhut jolokia selected strain is that its an improved strain here is the link on Judy's site http://www.pepperlover.com/pepper-seeds/heal-leve/world-hottest/peach-bhut-ss-pl-detail
Also thank you very much for your kindness & generosity ( seven of nine LoL)
P.S. I Plan to over winter at lest one of the Peach BJ S S
I will probably save seed form some pods but it will be non isolated op seed but if you want some I will send some your way this fall/winter

I looked at those Peach BJ SS and yeah, what I have are the regular ones.  Those SS look pretty gnarly in the pictures.  I'd love some seeds this fall/winter.  Unless you have a bhut load of bees around, roughly 3 out 4 seeds should be true.  (In my limited experience.)

I will try & isolate them as best I can maybe use some insect netting on one & plant them on the other side that gets more sun.
I am planting a lot of flowers this year to attract bee, butterflies & beneficial insects.
I plan on planting my aji melocoton ( PL) & aji brazilian starfish together with flowers around them for a intentional cross by bee's etc
If you want seeds for that cross I will send some your way.
I am also getting peach congo (PL) another Judy creation for a replacement for the tobago seasoning that didn't germinate .
You can have some if you don't already have some when I get them.

I also plan to cross this with Bahamian Goat (not with bees)
Anyway thanks again for the seeds

P.S. yes those are some gnarly pods I like them that along with the description sold me lol
Judy has so many great varieties and her prices are real reasonable .
It makes it hard to choose just one lol

Hey John, the Peach Reaper pods were not real big, but some had
the phenotype you showed in the picture.  I'll get some of the seeds
headed your way.  I assume you are still at the same addy?

Paul, yes, same address; thanks for sending.  I wasn't thinking of the Peach there for awhile.  It's the red podded one for which the seeds seem bad.  My own Peach, I have 8 of 9 germinated.  Together with some of yours, there's probably a good chance a plant or two will revert to red.  (Not real sure just how multiply-genic pod color is.)  Still holding out hope for the red seeds, too.

I know it's very late to be still starting seeds, but I planted flats PF6 and PF7 today.  PF6 is all super/ultra hots and PF7 is almost all jalapeños.
9tia0g.png

I've also updated the germination numbers for PF4 only, which you can see here.  Things are starting to pop in PF5 and I'll count those tomorrow.  I found some Orchid and Trinidad Congo Red seeds, so I replanted the empty cells at PF3-23 and PF3-17, respectively, though I don't hold out much hope they'll germinate.  I've given up on the Charapita (PF3-27) and TS CARDI (PF1-5), so I've replanted those cells with Reaper and TS Moruga Red, respectively.  That'll throw things even more out of whack with respect to where things are growth-wise, but I just can't stand to see those empty cells.

I planted a quarter pound of ginseng seed today and 3 dozen ramps plants.

Oh, yeah, I meant to mention, since PF5 is starting to pop, I turned on the lower tier of lights.  All three fixtures have one bulb that doesn't work and it's the circuit, not the bulbs.  I can switch the bulbs from one side to the other and the bulb that wasn't working works and the one that was working doesn't.  Kind of weird that all three fixtures would fail in the same way like that.  I've replaced one of them with a new T8 fixture and both bulbs work, so it's not something weird in the wiring leading to the fixtures.  I guess tomorrow I'll replace the other two.  Or maybe I'll replace all five remaining T12 fixtures.  I'd rather not spend the money, but I can sure tell a difference in the output, and so can the plants.

No worries John I am be starting more seeds when I get wicked mikes package and my replacement seed form Judy
We can't all be eager beaver's like some of the tbper's on here as much as we would like to be.
The local garden shops are behind anyway unless your Walmart, Lowes and menards and those places ship it in form warm places

Yeah, I'm not too worried.  The jalapeños are fast growers, so there's no problem there.  The late supers are for an experiment and they don't need to reach full production for it to be successful (though it would be nice).  If it's like it was two years ago, we had a snow in May, so there's plenty of time for them to catch up.

Awesome - 7 flats!  You are shaming the rest of us, John!

Good luck getting the light fixtures under control.  If you
are going to spend money on T8 fixtures, how about going
all the way to T5HO?  I have been totally satisfied with mine
from HTGSupply.com:
http://www.htgsupply.com/Category%2DFluorescent%2DGrow%2DLights

I bought the HTG generic for 50bucks for a 4', 2-tube fixture and it has
performed great so far.

Hey, Paul, I think the only shame will be if I don't manage to keep up with all of these.  I'm trying to find locals to help me grow some of them isolated from other peppers, and I have a tentative agreement with my certified-organic neighbor to grow the jalapenos.  That will relieve some of the effort.

I found a stash of old, but NIB, T12 fixtures so I guess I'll use those for now.  I'm not yet convinced that T5 has a substantial overall benefit over T8.  I know the light output is higher, but the newer T8 bulbs I've found are listed at 2900 lumens at 32 Watts.  That's a little over 90 lumens/W, which is not a whole lot less than the T5s.  Putting three of the T8 fixtures side-by-side provides full coverage for a 2'x4' area (4 1020 flats) at 2175 lumens/sq.ft., which is plenty for starting seedlings.  Considering I can buy a 2-bulb 4' T8 shoplight for $10.97 and a 2-pack of 6500K bulbs for $7.88 (5000K for $7.44), it's hard to justify the much higher cost of the T5s.

Especially considering whatever I buy (or don't) is just a stop-gap measure until some LED projects I'm working on bear fruit.  Now that I have some dead T12 fixtures, I think I'll try to convert those to LEDs.

Edit:  I just looked at what I think is the specific T5 model you bought, and that is by far the best deal I've seen on a T5 setup.

I guess that I like the T5s because I have to grow
under them for a few months, way past seedling stage.
I will say that my pubescens varieties like the regular
fluoros much better than the T5s.

It would be cool to not have to use lights at all!

Good luck with your LED project.

Thanks.  With any luck, I'll have some LED products ready in a few months.  May try to get some THPers to beta test for me.

You know, Jason, I think those seeds are no good.  I got none to germinate from my first planting, replanted 3/4 and have none from the second planting either.  I sent you quite a few so maybe you can mass sow them somewhere out of the way.  Maybe you'll get lucky.  I'm going to send you some of the Peach version.  Those have germinated 8 out 9 last time I checked and there may be a good chance some of them will revert to red.
