Sawyer '16 - Memorial Day update

Okay, time to get started.  Last year was not such a good pepper-growing year for me, but it was great in terms of getting a pepper condiment business off the ground.  My only two resolutions for 2016 are to keep better condiment production records and follow through on growing large quantities of peppers.  To that end, here's the list of varieties I have.  I won't grow everything on the list, but plan to grow most of these.  Some will only be a plant or two (for fresh seed production), some will be many, many more (for sauces and/or plant sales).  The ones marked with a leading (x), I'm out of stock, but am keeping them in the list to remind me I need to replace them (by trade mayhap, hint, hint).  Others, I think my stock is no good, either due to age or pantry moth infestation.  For the most part, those will be the first I start.  I tried to format this in multiple columns, but couldn't figure out how, so without further ado, here's the list:

The first ones I start will probably be Datil, Giant Mexican Rocoto, and whatever other seeds I have of suspect viability.
(*I've decided to switch camps from the 7 Pot crowd to the 7 Pod crowd.  If CARDI calls them "Seven Pod", who am I to say differently.  Here's a link to a pdf of their 2008 variety catalog.  I really like the 7 Pot origin story, i.e., hot enough for 7 pots of stew, but whatever.  As for "pod" vs. "berry", likewise, whatever.  A tomato is a botanical berry but also a culinary vegetable.  I would like to know the origin story of "seven pod", though.  Maybe it's due to seven peppers per node or something.  I think I've seen as many as eleven per node on my 7P Peach.)

Awesome list. Hope you have a zillion pods this year. That sprout needs company!
Hey, thanks Florisa.  A zillion pods would be just about right, I think.  I spent a little time looking and didn't see anything; do you have a glog on here?

I just checked PF #1 and here are the latest germination results.  #S = number of seeds sown, #G = number of seeds germinated.

More later.

John what is AR F2 & F3 ?
I seem to remember something about it but the details escape .
I have been looking at your flats list again you have some interesting varieties that I may have to hit you up on this fall with the parcel you sent the tomatoes & flower garden I am at my limit this season.
Wishing you a better season then last .

Hey, Jason, my screen isn't displaying whatever you typed after AR and before F2 & F3.  Looking at what I've planted, though, I'm guessing it's a banana?  If so, it's a yellow "not white" bhut that showed up in my 2013 grow.  I grew PL's white bhut, which is a cross between a yellow bhut and white habanero, so it's not surprising a couple reverted to yellow.  Besides just being a generally superior yellow bhut (imo), they also had a distinct banana fragrance.  I started a community grow for these in 2014 that you can read about here.  I kind of dropped the ball on that, but do recall that a couple of folks (PaulG and Solem22, I think) had some that reproduced the banana fragrance.  Seeds from one of those guys are the F3.  (Sorry, my records are confused on who.)  The F2 are my own original stock.  I can send you some seeds, if you want to try them.  Or this fall with ever else you want to try.

Noticed a lot more green in Flat #1 awhile ago.  Off to take a census...

Some seed this fall would be fine don't think I will have space for them this year.
Thanks in advance glad your geting good germination results hope your plants grow strong & you get lots of pods .

10-4 on seeds.  So far so good with germination.  I'm later than I would like to be, but spring has been so late the last two or three years, maybe I'll be okay.

John I have been back & fourth on ordering this form totally tomatoes.
I am wondering what your thoughts are?
If I did I would have to plant only a few seeds an out them in pots http://www.totallytomato.com/dp.asp?pID=03079&c=36&p=Golden+Ghost+Hybrid+Pepper
I don't know about that one.  Generally, I like to stay away from commercial hybrids, but they're not really that different from a lot of the crosses we grow.  It might be interesting to see what they're like and how the seeds grow out in subsequent generations.  I notice it's a C. annuum, so it doesn't seem quite right to call it a ghost.

Here's the PF #1 germination results as of this morning:
rtkvi8.png

Not too bad, I guess, for nine days in.  Hopefully the no-shows will pop soon.

Nothing showing on PF #2 yet, but that's not surprising since it's only been 4 days.  On the other hand, there is a single Red Nagabrain up in PF #3, which I think is pretty impressive for being sown only 4 days.  Haven't sown PF #4; got sidetracked.  Will try to do it this afternoon.  Also have seeds selected for PF #5 (mostly annuums) and PF #6 (larger quantities of yellow, brown and red chinenses).

Your making good progress not bad at all .
The golden ghost hybrid being labeled a capsicum annuum had me wondering about that as well I've seen lemon Drop missed labelled & papa Joe did it on his red ghost & I seen it done to habaneros.
It bugs me when a business does that but in this case it has me wondering did they cross with a cap annuum .
Guess I am just going to have to grow some of these out lol.
Oh so far the Aji Cereza have been beast I think there going to be huge plants .

I'll be interested to see how the golden "ghost" performs for you.

Regarding the Aji Cereza seeds you sent, do you know if those are the original Peruvian strain or the PepperLover strain?  They sure have germinated well for me, with 7 of 8 germinated.

Good to see the seeds are germination well for you to, my rates have always been excellent :D Keep in mind, the MFPJ18 and 32 #3 are slow to germinate. I was impatient after a week and sowed more... well lesson learned lol ;)
Hey, Stefan, yeah your seeds are giving me some of the best rates with 100% for three varieties.  Fingers crossed for the rest.

I planted Pepper Flat #4 today, with the varieties shown back in this post.  I have three additional flats ready to go, two for peppers and one for tomatoes.  I don't usually count germinations twice in one day, but I did today.  Here are the latest results for PF #1:
2edpjsx.png

The lighter green coding indicates increased germination from the last posting.  Darker green indicates no change.  Bright yellow indicates 100% germination.  (Red will indicate seedlings lost from last posting.  Hopefully I won't have too many of those, but I do have a few helmet heads, so it's certainly a possibility.)  The main thing I'd like to point out here is that a second P. Dreadie Select has popped. :woohoo:

Hi John decided not to order the golden ghost just don't have the room .
The Aji Cereza is Judy's strain great germination for me as well 5 out of six & I think there the tallest of the two other baccatums in that flat
I did sow my last flat for peppers tonight
The seeds you sent some more ancient sweet , tangerine Dream ,Carbonero X Yellow Butch T-D3 ,El Oro De Ecuador-Trident
I have 3 more tomato flats to sow have one of purple Cherokee Heart an Oxheart variety.
If I need more flats I have them room is another thing lol

Hey, Jason, I wound up with 8 of 8 for the Aji Cereza.  As of today, I've sown at least some of every pepper I intend to.  I may plant a couple more flats for backups and/or distribution.  Need to plant one or two flats of tomatoes in a day or so.

nice to see things are popping for you John ;)
Hey, Scott, thanks for looking in.  Things are starting to roll now.

Here are the latest germination results from Pepper Flats #1 and #3:

Flat #2 has only three sprouts, one of the very old, but refrigerated Ghosts (yay!), and a Tobago Treasure and a Bonda Ma Jacque, both from 2013.  Hopefully more will soon pop, but that flat is mostly old seed, so I don't expect too much.  Main thing to notice in PF #1 is that all four of the P. Dreadie SSB have germinated.  The PF #3 numbers are from this (Sunday) morning.  By the time I finished planting this evening, there seemed to be a lot more happening there, but I won't tally the newbies until tomorrow (Monday) morning.

I planted three more flats today.  Pepper Flat #5:

Pepper Flat #6:

Pepper Flat #7:

That completes the first round and includes at least some of everything I have, I think.  I may plant two more flats, one of jalapeños and one of supers, but tomatoes are up next.  I have some duplications, especially in the last flat, but all seven flats have essentially 36 varieties each.  I think allowing for duplications, I'm still close to 240 varieties.  I didn't know I had that many.

Hi John did a last minute order form totally tomatoes ordered Lemon Drop the pepper & Lemon Drop the cherry tomato also abracazebra a green cherry tomato & the golden ghost hybrid.
I still need to sow the rest of my tomtoes that I already have.
It looks like you got a handle on your grow great progress congrats on the seedlings form your old stock.

Wow John! Cranking away on the flat sowing! I was not planning on growing much of anything until Jason (GA Growhead) sent me some seed crosses he has got going. I've got 25 plants total with a late start.

I germinated in late February and trying to get some size before missing the usual hardening off time of late March to early April. I've got 3 EOB F6's and the rest are Jason's creations.

Not sure if I will commit to a glog or not though.

Best wishes for your success!

Mike

Hi Jason, those are some interesting varieties.  I wonder if the golden ghost is misnamed C. chinense or an annuum they've developed that just happens to sort of look like a ghost.  Guess you'll find out.

Hey Mike, thanks.  Glad to hear you'll be growing something.  Hope you'll do a glog, even if it's infrequently updated.  I'm way late with my start, but I think there's still plenty of time.  I've got some EOB planted, but I think I've lost track of which generation(s).  Good luck to you!

Here are this morning's germination results.  PF#1 seems like it's starting to taper off, though I still hold out hope for the no-shows.  It's been almost 2 weeks, though.
2s9emmf.png

Nothing much happening with PF#2, as expected due to the age of the seed.  Still, the GA Black has done well and the results for the old Red Ghost validates simple refrigeration (not freezing) as a seed viability extender.
fblxmv.png

PF#3 is starting to pop now, 8 days after sowing.
smyv0l.png

It's only been 4 days since PF#4 was sown, so nothing there yet.

Still decent germ rates, funny how obvious the difference is with MFPJ18 and the rest. That's the only one the seeds are not coming from myself, I got them in return from a friend that grew it for me. It has been slow here to but still ended up with decent germ rates.

Yeah, sometimes they just don't want to germinate.  Could be maturity or curing or storage or the particular cross or...  One came up, so maybe there will be more.  I'm impressed that MFPJ15 germinated 8 of 8.  I'm pretty sure those seeds are from last year.  Glad to hear overall you're getting good rates.
