seeds Seedlings Sprouting!!!! Help!

Hi there!

I just started growing chillies and my seeds have started sprouting! I got my own seed from a chili I ate and thought it would be cool to grow them. I got about a 90% germination rate.

Question: My seeds just started to sprout and they are coming out of the soil about 1 inch. The leaves are just starting to form. I was wondering, is it ok to put them out in direct sunlight? What is the recommended amount of sun for the babies? I don't want to kill them.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I definitely wouldn't put them into direct sunlight yet (not outdoors anyways). They're just not strong enough. Give them a few weeks minimum then slowly get them used to the outdoors an hour at a time.

Personally I'd wait until they're at least 3inches tall and have formed a bunch of leaves and a stronger stem so they can handle the elements such as wind as well.

If they just now sprouted, then it is ok to put them outside in the sun. It is not advised when they have been growing inside under artificial light for a period of time.

Great, thanks for your help! I don't have a grow light yet, I'm guessing that might help them along for now. They don't need to maintain a soil temp of 80-90 degrees anymore since they've sprouted right? I'm gonna let them get some sun for a few hours a day to see how that goes.

I'm a nooby, this is the first thing I've ever tried to grow and I'm having trouble finding info on this stage of growth. Everything I find is about germination the after they have sets of leaves.

i guess if they haven't got used to an artificial atmosphere you would okay, but definitely keep your eyes on them. they're very vulnerable to the elements. I've had some bad luck with this exact situation so I've always tried to play things safe until they get stronger. good luck!

Welcome to the form! If you don't have a light put them in a southern facing window so they can get some sun, but it won't be direct or intense. You could put them outside, but the sun has been hot here in newport beach all week so I wouldn't advise it since they are still pretty young.

Thanks LGHT, it's pretty dang hot today and i let them have about an hour of basking and they started to lean over and look tired, so I brought them back in the shade. Hope they recover... I'll figure it out soon enough. Thanks for the input. I'll get them to a window.

Yeah I would keep them in a window for at least a couple of weeks since it's pretty hot right now then find a spot that will allow them a few hours a day.
