I'm not sure how much this fits the topic, but I just buy a bag of seed-starting mix, some worm castings, and add a little old soil. The mixture is about 40-55% seed-staring soil (store bought, could just use peat with perlite), 20-25% worm castings, and 25-35% recylced soil. Oh, I do also add a heaping-handful of perlite.

Mixing like this simpy cuts the cost; seed-starting soil isn't the most expensive thing, but it's not cheap when you need a good amount.

Time involved (aside from aquiring the ingredients) is only about 5 minutes to mix together, and done.

Plants have enough food to last them for a good while, and I have never seen signs of burning.

I actually crack seeds on wet paper towels and sew them straight into the above mix when the tail is only 1 cm long or so.
