Shadowchilli Grow Log

Ok so here it goes, my first try at a grow log.
Here is the list of the different types i have growing, or starting. A lot of these are overwintered from last season. Unfortuantly alot of the tags i had to label the plants have all been blown away. Will have to wait and see what pods i get
-trinidad scorpian red
-trinidad scorpian butch t
-doughla
-orange manzano
-red rocotto
-bhut jolokia
-bih jolokia
-yellow 7 pod
-7 pod jonah
-7 pod barrackpore
-yellow fatalii
-yellow cayene
-red cayene
-black prince
-red habs
-mustard habs
-orange habs
-peach habs
-hungarian wax
-lemon??
-assorted birdseye's
-yellow scorp cardi
-CGN21500 C.Chinense

This is a little present that i got a couple of days ago for my birthday.
The idea is i start my seeds out indoors, and once they go outside into the greenhouse they sit on the tray up the top, and once big enough to potup again they go down the bottom, and eventually outside.

Also for my birthday i got a joke present.
For those of you who dont know, my real name is Allan. My parents loved the recent video clip with the talking animals they decided to get me these. As since they did they will now be the mascots for growing my chillis, lol.

Good luck with the pubes :) I have read they don't normally make fruit first season.

Most of my older chillies have kicked into budding mode. I wouldn't mind this but they're all still tiny. Not sure how to get them to grow up and not make pods now?
I did an experiment last season on pinching buds. Out of six identical orange habs I pinched the buds off two and they didn't grow taller or any faster than the others. The only difference was the pinched off ones had a few less pods.
I'm going to have to just push on with how they are now.

Truth be told, all the soil was was 1/2 90% done compost, and 1/2 bought potting soil. Also added a little blood and bone when i planted, but thats all.

Two of my Rocoto plant produced fruit in their first season. They are listed as a longer season plant yet I saw flower buds developing on my best two starts 60 days after they had sprouted last season.

The trick is to get them to set fruit by meeting their requirements. This season I will experiment with growing some Rocoto plants in the ground to see how root-ball temperature influences fruit set.

And their requirements would be?? Other than not hot as hell weather...

Going against everything everyone has said on here...
I actually dont mind if my plants are a little leggy the first year, it makes the main stem taller and means when i cut it back there is a taller plant. In my opinion it means more nodes, more flowers and hopefully more pods for the second year (assuming overwintering goes well).
Anyone care to comment? Would love to know if i have this wrong, its only from personal experience...

I think the problem is that 'leggy' isn't the same as tall. Leggy means you have a lot of stem space between leaves, meaning you have less nodes for potential bushy growth to come out of them. New growth likes to start where buds or flowers come out and its much more rare to have them pop out in the middle of the stem. That said, a leggy plant usually indicates that it isn't getting something that it needs, usually light. Nothing wrong with a tall plant, but leggy is a bit different. Wondering if anyone else has more experience with this that's just from my observations.

So what you're saying is I should put the plants I REALLY want to grow in my compost/potting/blood & bone mix?

I saved a pile of spent potting mix from last season, added composted manure, and am planning on adding blood & bone when I use it. Should be interesting to see how it goes up against my standard mix.

When i was planting these two plants, i actually ran out of my normal mix, hence why there is so much compost in there, lol.
My normal mix is around:
50% Potting soil(Bags)
25% Coir
20% Compost
5% Perlite
And some blood and bone.

I make it in batches in the wheel barrow and then put it in big cointainers in the shed covered up just to rest for a little while. Then it is ready to use as i need it :)

Time for an update.

Overview of some of the early starts of the season, trying to bring them back from being stalled.

Just a shot of some of the little seedlings sitting there growing slowly.

I wasnt expecting to get any pods first year for these platns, but it looks like i might have one :woohoo:

Just a couple of shots of some random platns, all doing their thing happily :)

Been a sort of productive day...repotted a few plants today that were all overwinted.

DSCN0211.jpg

The couple in the front have been repotted, the ones at the back will be done over the next few days...

These plants here were repotted quite a while ago (about 2 months) and kept away from all the rain and wind, will learn to do this for all my other plants next year

One of my overwintered scorps :)

DSCN0215.jpg

I thinks from memory this one was called a black prince, but not sure. Overwintered...

DSCN0216.jpg

even though there isnt a lot of growth, there is a flower open. :woohoo:

Sorry that the photos are not great but i only have my phone to take photos with.

Any questions, comments....feel free :)
Peace.

I decided I needed a little more room for some of my chilli plants. There were some roses in this bed before, but the soil was extremely compacted and hard as a rock.
I thought I would soak it with some water to try and soften it up...

DSCN0364.jpg

So I let it sit for a little while until I came outside and saw this mess....

And here is the little bugger that did it. He's only 10 weeks old so I can’t stay mad at him.

Here is the finished bed....

Don’t ask me what the plants are since my little puppy decided to eat all the name tags that I had. I do know that there are two barrackpore's and a yellow 7pod.
The other ones I am going to have to wait till they fruit to find out.

Dog in the garden, dog in the garden!!! Lol! I think it is hilarious how on THSC orders they tell you to keep children and dogs away from them. Yours made a little home. Great idea with the fencing.

That's a good number of pods on the Red Rocoto plant. Do you have any background information on the origins of the Red Rocoto?

Other than this link : Click me :)
I dont really know much other than that.
The seeds that i have for this plant came from a member on here...problem is i cant remember who it was that sent them to me...
If the person that sent them to me reads this please tell me so i can thank you!!

Only thing is, the pods i have growing dont really look like a little apple...they are to long and not rounded enough, unless that changes as they grow bigger ???

Rocoto isn't a term used to refer to one specific variety of Capsicum Pubescens. I think it's unlikely the variety you have is the one pictured in the Red Rocoto (Rojo) listing. This particular listing though seems to be a rather generic one judging by the details.

A list of Capsicum Pubescens compiled on thechileman.org shows they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Nothing I saw that had a photo matched your Red Rocoto.

I was thinking much the same thing. I am trying to remeber where i got the seeds from, but alas i cant :(
What i can do though it keep taking photos of the fruit as they grow, and i will also take a couple photos of the open flowers, hopefully that will help with ID.
photos to come tomorrow night :)

lol yeah i think i remeber seeing that warning :)
Hopefully i made the little fence in the bed high enough, he is only 10 weeks old so quite little still, but he is going to grow up and be quite a good medium sized dog.
i have had dogs before and they have always been trained and well behaved, but it takes time to get them that way lol.
He has already dug a few holes and destroyed a few things, but thats what its like having a puppy

How is the Orange Manzano coming along compared to your Red Rocoto? The photos revealed that caterpillars have had a feast on it.
