Shurb's 2014 GLOG

Well, I guess I'll get started seeing as I've now got my first hooks well before season start.

So, I got me one of them heated propagator thingimadoobawackies and popped in 3 Habanero Orange seeds and 3 Whippets Tails for a test.
The Hab's decided to work it out. No go on the Whippets, but I think that's because it dried out at one point. Oh well, one pod has thousands of seeds, so all good :D

Here's the Habanero Orange hooks in soil next to an avocado the missus is trying to get started.

And here they are. Ain't they cute?

Here's the indoor setup

Top: Them ones I did dun just showed you.
Middle: Pubes - Red Rocoto, Yellow Rocoto, Rocoto San Isidro, Canario, Mini Rocoto.
Bottom: Habanero Chocolate overwinter. It got a little bit of the stuntie during the season, and it only gave me one good pod, but I decided to let it recover inside and it's going well!

Habanero Chocolate (I'll get a better pic soon, I promise!)
It's got buds forming too, which is cool.

This is what I'm REALLY looking forward to.

Yellow Rocoto - with yellowing leaves to boot =\ Gotta get it some food methinks.

Red Rocoto - Bet you couldn't tell from the label, huh!

Canario - State the obvious, Shurb!

Outdoor overwinters. That Bell is the only pod to produce and it's still growing. We'll see if I get a ripe red one...

That's all for plant porn for now. In the coming weeks, I'll be getting some new one's started, care of this little package from JungleRain.
(Bottom right is Manzano Orange)

All looking good bro ... loving the pubescens varieties awesome

Cheers guys. Yeah, very happy with the pubescens. Scored them from fresh pods off Aussie. Gonna start giving them some 1/4 strength fert. At least, I hope I have the calculations right =\ I hate math, lol.

Gave my seedlings their first round of fert on Saturday and they've taken it well.

Rocoto San Isidro #1 - The translucent whitish film on the leaves is from an epsom spray I believe. It washed away after I watered it. Leaves seem to be fine.

Avocado has finally thrown a root and keeps growing a little bit more each day. Wifey is super happy.

Still have more germinating which I hope start to pop soon.
I removed them from the ziplock bags and sowed them in soil as I has some mold developing. My Brainstrain seeds went mushy, so I've got more of those soaking in some h202 overnight and then I'll sow them straight into some soil.

Oh well, you never stop learning. :D

I've had an avo seed sitting in water for months now... I don't know whether to give up on the damn thing or not. To be honest, I don't even know why I'm trying to start it. It's a Hass, I think. I mean, not bad. One of my favourites, in fact, but what I really want is a Sir Prize tree. Best avos. Ever! What type you trying to get going there?

Hey Gassy, just heard word from my wife that the one she got started is a Shepherd. Hass are apparently notoriously difficult to get started.
Has is started to open up at all?

Awesome to see the avocado rooting (of course, your other plants look gorgeous anyway). How many years will it take before you'll be making guacamole from home grown avocados?

Thanks mate. From what I hear, it will be around 3-5 years before it produces. Some say 10 years, but it's conflicted information everywhere. With a bit of luck, it will be doing its thang in a couple of years.

Kinda sounds like a PhD, lol

Nah, it's being a biatch. The skin is cracking but no root (dunno if that means anything?). Stupid (but delicious) Hass. I think I'm just going to give up on it and see if I can't score an already started Sir Prize (best avo.... ever!) or at least an already started Hass. Avos take years to start producing anyway, don't they? Stuff that, I want a head start. :D

Hahaha yeah a head start would be good lol.
This one started to root after it cracked enough to let water inside I guess. It's powering along now with a 2-3 inch root hahaha, they're so slow.

Got home tonight to some more babies! Wewt!

Bahamian Goat Pepper - This one has been up for a few days but now has a couple of siblings rising up.

Brain Strain hooks - 6 days is all these babies took!

And now for non pepper related pic.

Avocado shoot almost out of the seed. The root is now almost at the bottom of the cup.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Moved house and only just back into normality... somewhat.

Most of the overwinters aren't looking too great. I think they got hit by a frosty night and didn't take it too well. They're sheltered but most of them lost their leaves and they haven't put out any new ones. The Trinidad Scorpion CARDI Yellow is looking nice and green still.

Onto the updates:

C. Pubescens are loving the warmer climate (When I say warmer, it's only a few degrees Celsius more)
The Rocoto San Isidro and Canario are going awesome. Going to have to pot them all up very soon.

Biker Billy's Jalapeño - 6 days to hook - I used the soak for 24 hours in 3% H202 and sow into soil method. Works like a charm.

I have some Fatalii, 7pot Primo, Jays Peach Ghost F5, and Pimenta de Neyde seeds sown. Still waiting for them to pop.

Update on the avocado:

No need to put soil in yet, it's looking healthy and continuing to grow. It's started to throw a couple more shoots out and some more roots over the last week.

Here's my view:

You did well to keep those alive during the move. Seperate trip just for the babies?

The overwinters went on their own trip in the back of a ute. The seedlings stayed on my lap. Lost a few in the trip though, but all the rocotos lived through it.

Gotta take some photos for an update. Somehow we went straight from winter, skipped spring and getting summer already lol.

I'm loving this place.

I know I said I was gonna update, but by the time I go to update, my pics are out of date...

Rocoto San Isidro:

Both are in 300mm pots. Feeding once a week epsom as a folialar feed and a mix of seasol and powerfeed for vegies.
The C.Pubescens varieties need to move to the other side of the house now as they're being hit by too much sun in the afternoon.

More pics to come tomorrow. I'll get some close ups of the furry little buggers :D

Update time with clearer pics:

Tomatoes - (ignore the fallen, they are not worthy :D)
