That will definitely cause pods to be smaller. If you want smaller pods, you could force it by keeping them in a small container, heh.

Very hot weather can also stunt growth.
I think this ^^^ is what the issue might have been . After re-potting them the plants had a second growth spurt around the same time it flowered. I think the energy went into growing a bigger plant and the pods suffered. I know with chinense the first lot are normally small, but once the plant reaches maturity bigger pods come.

Certainly not root bound, I only re-potted them into larger pots this spring.
On the subject of roots, when I removed them from their old pots around 70% of last years roots had died off over the course of winter.
