Spankys 2016 stripped down, strain poor, hot damn, return to the dirt GLOG!

Greetings everyone ! Just got my season underway here in Portland Oregon after sitting out while just tinkering a bit the past few seasons. This year is different in that I'm not growing out as many plants or strains as in the past. It was tough to resist that little voice that wispers what about this pepper or that strain or how about that cool cross so and so sent you but I seeded 72 rooters and managed to fight off that temptation .. well almost . I was gonna only grow 2 strains and 1 cross but while digging out my cross seeds I ran across some Jays Peach Bhuts which I had to include because the only other time I tried them the seeds sent me were crossed. These come from John Ford and he's never let me down in the past, but that was it ! And that was strictly a principle thing just didn't want that strain to get the best of me lol.

The scale back was due to a few things, first I'm growing primarily to make my hot sauce which I never have enough of. I can sell as much of it as I make. Secondly my growing space is small and with so many strains you tend to end up with many crossed seeds, I want to attempt to keep things as pure as possible, more on that later in the season. So I chose my favorite, a curiosity, a bad assed cross and the afore mentioned Peach Bhut. Here's the line up.

30 Primos from Primos peppers .. My favorite
24 Reapers from Puckerbutt .. curious to see how different is it REALLY from the Primo
12 of a cross that I believe was between a Reaper and a Jigsaw though not sure for now we're tentatively calling this Ripsaw it is a bumpy hot bastard I mean HOT! I have never tryed to grow out a cross so wanted to try.
6 Peach Bhuts .. reason stated above

So here's my humble beginning

Hers a pic of a Green Ripsaw a friend of mine grew out from some seeds I gave him, he had some red pod pics but lost them with his phone. I never thought to take pics of the few I had. He is growing out 18 I think, will keep you all updated may also have some questions along the way

Well that's it for now will update this as often as I can .. life you know .. It's busy .. seems like I'm always at work. I wish you all a GREAT season and hope to catch up with some old timers over the next few months

Well things are moving along ahead of schelude but the weather has cooperated so it works out great, I have gotten my plants hardened off all except for 7 late poppers and today I transplanted them all into 1 gallon pots all except those 7 late poppers and 1 stunted runt.

I used a mix of 50% Ocean Forest and 50% Happy Frog, with 10-15% big chunk perlite and also some oyster shell I have found this mix gives me the best results. I pre mix CalMag plus and ProGrow at full strength the add 1 to 1-1/2 cups of each to a gallon of water every watering this way they get a dilute taste of nutes every-time I water when transplanting I add Vitiman B1.

I found out the hard way that ProGrow and CalMag can actually go bad so I start with fresh nutes every year tossing out the old ones. So here's some pics !

This ones a little blurry ..

We have Primos, Respers and our own cross called Ripsaw for the time being as we think it's a cross between a Jigsaw and a Reaper, it's a nasty hot bumpy bastard we'll see how it goes never tried to grow out a cross before. For whatever reason the Ripsaws seem to be the heartiest and healthiest with roots exploding out the bottoms, Here's some plant pics

Primo from Mr Primo himself!

Reapers from Pucker Butt

And last but not least Ripsaw ( at least for now)

Well there you have it hope you enjoyed the update with pics thanks so much for stopping by. I have been very busy but I do want to check in on some of your grows as well see what I can learn . Any advice on growing out a cross would be welcomed, well until next time ....

Greetings everyone I have not posted in a bit life's just been very busy, changes at work my wife's mother's struggle with cancer that ended a few days ago I've found little time to work with the plants. I had some late germinaters but am pleased to report they have caught up and been potted into one gallon pots with the others I also had some runts which can be seen in these pics

I actually gave those away and potted up the stragglers and now we look more like this

So the plan from here is next time I have days off in a row and it's not 100 degrees I'm gonna transplant these into the ground and let em go. That's it for today just a quick update still have a lot going on thanks for stopping by !

Hey everyone it has been awhile since I updated this GLOG but life has been busy. I usually get plants in the ground the 1st of June but didn't get it done til the end of the month. I dug out holes putting big scoopes of potting soil a big handful of earthworm castings and steamed bone meal and planted them, they always go into a little funk for a few days to a week but then turn around. They are starting to turn around and to look good.

I'm not sure what I was thinking I'll never use this many pods! I was gonna make a grip of hotsauce because everyone bugs me about it but with all these peppers I don't have room for tomatoes. So mark my words there WILL BE primo and reaper pods to sale lol. Here's some more pics

Here's one side of the garden about 50 plants in all.

Already getting little pods ; )

Well there you have it a quick update, see you folks again soon !

Well just a quick check in, plants aren't podding quick enough so I've hit with some heavy bloom nutes twice in the last few weeks and bam just like that the are flowering like crazy, thought I'd share some pepper plant porn

Well that's how my girls are doing hope to have some pod pics soon! See you all next time !

So guys here's my dilemma because of being busy I got my plants out into the ground late then when planting I dug a hole used good soil to fill the hole partially then a big scoop of earthworm castings and a equal scoop of bone meal except when I was buying the bone meal I grabbed the wrong box ( the boxes of different amendments all looked similar ) and didn't realize until I was 3/4 the way through my planting that I had grabbed Bat guano instead of bone meal, SO essentially I had given all plants a double shot of nitrogen and NO phosphorus. It was too late to undo this, usually this time of year I have pods already but this year tho the plants are healthy no pods to speak of, the ones that have come have been hot little runts a result of too much nitrogen. The past too weeks I have watered them with a heavy bloom formula at 2 week intervals and will continue and it does look like the flowers have doubled BUT I'm quickly running out of time here in the Pacific NW. I may get one more month of good weather

Has anyone been here before just curious what steps you took and what was the outcome ?
