sphagnum moss question.

Will a layer of sphagnum moss applies to the bases of my 'pot bound' chilli plants have a detrimental effect?

I seem to have issues keeping the soil PH down on the pot bound chillies.

i had this problem . didn't want to use chemicals in fear of killing my plants . i used pine needles . naturally lowers p.h. and or oak leaves . but the pine needles deter bugs also . learned this from a friend who owns a nursery .

I've used pine with my blueberries, seems to be very slow working, but I did noticed the pot with the more pine had fewer weeds growing
I'm hoping the moss should be slightly faster working as it doesn't need to break down, I've also switched to an ericaceous fertiliser.

Another possible benefit of sphagnum moss I hope is the slowing of water evaporation from the soil... :-)

sphagnum moss is 30% of my soil mix
 
And I think its atleast 30% of ProMix

I've not seen available as a soil mix over here in the UK, it might be available in more specialist garden shops though.

However...

I was reading that apparently peat is sphagnum moss. The only difference between what is in my compost, and what I've just put on the top, is one is dead the other is living.
