Spontaneous Combustion

That's what they concluded. The windows were up. the doors shut and locked.

My daughter went to bed at 10 pm. Fire started somewhere around 5 am. I have been looking for incidents of spontaneous combustion of automobiles 7 or more hours after the last time driven or even just running. Nothing yet.

I'm just glad she wasn't sleeping in it.

sounds like maybe they don't want to investigate an arson?

I've never understood how fire investigators can determine what room in a house a fire starts in or that kind of thing... I doubt they could tell the difference here.

Spontaneous combustion of a car 7 hours after driving is a tough one to swallow...

We are pursuing an arson possibility, even if the "authorities" refuse to. I perhaps mistakenly told the chief of police (actually a friend of mine) that if we discover arson and an arsonist, they'd better get to him first. This is a fairly rural area, but we have a nutjob population just like anywhere else...

This may come to a dead end, but still it is just too odd....

Stock stereo system?

Or custom with a amp and such? Maybe installed by a boyfriend or something?

Is my first thought

Second thought is arson

Glad your kid is ok, Stetto.

It did have a aftermarket stereo in it, I think a Pioneer. She hated it because half the functions worked intermittently, the other half not at all.
No sub, no power amp.

Good catch.

She's had this car (with this radio already in it) for a little over a year.

I think I'll shudder now....

Super glad your family is safe. It's stories like this that put everything in perspective. I'll sheepishly admit to having a crummy day just because some results at work were unfavorable...

Was the car parked over pavement? If it was parked over tall grass, my only additional guess would be possibly the hot exhaust system started a small smoldering pile that picked up in the early morning wind?

Other than that... arson was at the front of my mind after seeing the original post.

I don't think you have to be an expert to be able to tell the fire didn't start in the engine. There is almost no scorching on the hood and the front tyres look fine. Looks like arson to me. A quick burning fire like the kind you would get from gasoline or something seems to be most probable. It didn't burn long or hot enough to damage anything in the front or back (the head and tail lights aren't melted for example). How did the trunk look on the inside?

Edit: Were these pictures taken at the same spot where the car was burning? What happened to the glass of the windows?

Oh, the difference a day makes...

No, they haven't changed their official conclusion of "spontaneous combustion"...yet, but guess what.

This morning my wife went in for a copy of the police report. She was told that they reopened the investigation.

Apparently that same morning, less than an hour later and only a few blocks away, another vehicle needed to be put out. This vehicle was on a construction site and the ignition was witnessed: Someone threw a lit flare through the drivers window. Why that fact alone didn't give pause to those looking at my daughters car I'll need to ask.

I'm waiting for the phone to ring, the chief owes me a call.

No, the car had been moved to an impound yard.

When the fire was discovered, the drivers window was already gone, they watched the fire blow out the rest. The hood was wrecked by firefighters who needed to keep it from spreading forward.

Those tires are brand new, and they said we can't have them.
