container-growing Starting out

Good evening!

Germinated some seeds and forgot to label them so no idea what they will be. (as a bonus some tomatoes also) 🤣
It has been roughly 12 days and looking alright.

Purely in test mind tried to overwinter some plants, but only this scotch bonnet survived.

Attached pics but in no particular order (full tray is tomatoes)

Gotta run to garden centre for more seeds!

Mystery Plants

I had a ghost pepper plant a guy at my work gave me last year. He dug it up before it got cold. I took it home and it had some peppers on it but they were not ripe. In December, the peppers got ripe and I removed them from the plant. Over the winter I watered the plant and kept it under 2 grow lights. In late February I got some flowers but they fell off. Late April it started to get warm out and I put it on my Moms deck. Then the wind and rain seemed to not end and basically killed the plant. Now trying to grow Habanero peppers and have some Chocolate reaper seeds I might try to plant.

Everything else grows nicely, but the chillies just wont grow.. any ideas what might cause it? I water them regularly and they get plenty of sunlight.

My first thought is that those seedlings look kind of yellow to me. I don't know what type of seedling starting mix or potting soil you are using, but do you know if there are any nutes in it? Also, the soil looks wet and possibly a bit heavy or dense to me. Peppers seem to do better when the soil has good drainage. I don't see any perlite in that soil, but then again maybe it is lighter than it looks? A bit hard to be sure just from looking at the photo, but those are my thoughts. So assuming that they are getting plenty of light as you say (some of them do look a bit leggy to me as well), then I am thinking possibly either a lack of nutrients, poor drainage, or both.

The soil is draining really well and that is brand new soil in them so should not be lack of nutrients. It looks wet as it was just watered.

One thing did cross my mind is that maybe the roots are just too tightly packed at the bottom? I might try to repot them and loosen the roots if that is the case.

Well, not all seedling starter mix and potting mixes contain fertilizers out of the bag. I would check the bag and verify that yours does. It is easy enough to add a little if needed. Osmocote Flower and Vegetable plant food has worked well on pepper plants for me. Nutrient lockout could be another possible reason for why your seedlings are yellow and not thriving.

I think potting up could be a good idea for the larger seedlings at this stage. Although the smallest ones also look yellowish to me, and I doubt that they have filled the container with roots already. Also, I doubt that just being too rootbound is your primary issue here. I have grown pepper plants to fruit in plastic shot glasses. I mean, how rootbound do you imagine these guys are? 😉
