Stefan_W's 2013 Pods A-Ripenin'! Glog

I am going to start the new glog for my upcoming growing season on a bit of a personal note. One year ago tomorrow (January 3rd) is the one year anniversary of the day that my daughter was diagnosed with a tumour that is lodged in the middle of her brain. The past year has involved treatments and hospital stays, and there were at least three different points when we were pretty sure she was not going to make it. But she is a fighter, and nothing could keep her down for long.

Sofia has personally planted every pepper and tomato seed that I have started in the past three growing seasons. She beat the odds last year to help me, and once again she is defying what medicine has to say to help me out this year.

We started a jalapeno plant about a week ago just for the sake of watching it grow, because we both love it so much. One of the jalapenos grew to the point that it had its firt couple of leaves, so we transplanted him into a bigger pot. While we were at it I decided to put in some aji lemondrops, partly because they take a long time to fruit up and I wanted to give them a huge head start.

This is the jalapeno plant. I pulled the second one out because we did not need it, and discovered that the roots had grown all of the way down to the bottom of the cell.

Her aim is better than mine, and so it turned out perfectly.

Next up was taking out the lemondrop seeds from peppermania.

I need a few extras of this type, so I asked Sofia to plant two seeds in each of the four cells. Two plants will be for us, and whatever else grows will be given away to good friends.

Two of the three tiers in my lighting stand are currently being used as toy shelves, which is cool for now. The lights are adjustable, and moved down to get close to the seedling.

The heating pad works extremely well, and once the cells are covered the top clouds up in no time.

A happy early jalapeno seedling in his new home. I thought I heard "feeeeeed meeeeee" coming from that direction, but I'm not sure.

That's it for today, folks! Welcome to my new glog :welcome:

Hi Stefan
How much of the white stuff did you end up with? I think we got a foot or a bit more, but it's hard to tell since it was blowing and drifting so much. it's about 4:30 here and the wind finally died down.

I'll buy the pixie dust theory... it's the only thing that makes sense to me! ;)

Same here with the drifting snow, the high winds make it really tough to tell for sure. I ended up doing major shovelling three times in the past 24 hours, which is quite a bit. When I was out this morning the wind had died down and it wasn't too bad being out there.

Wishing you and all others up dat way well, may the pepper Jah send some heat your way :)

The seedlings continued to pop, so the Butch Ts, Peach Bhuts, Yellow TSs, and Red 7 Pod Gigantics were moved out from under the dome.

This made room to start 8 seeds each of Pêssego Brasileiro, Mako Akokasrade, White Habernero, and Scotch Bonnet Peach Long.

On an unrelated note, I'm selling two of my seedlings to a guy at the local hot sauce store tomorrow. Time to start making back some of the cash I blew on seeds this year.

Nice to see ya make some $$$ back and nice update ... I'll be interested in how your White Habanero does, our son wants me to grow one in addition to the White Bhut Jolokia we started but I'm not starting anything new till summer.

I've heard the white habs can be tough to germinate, which is why I'm starting them with the supers instead of later this month with the other habs and jalapenos. The seeds are actually one of the throw ins from Judy, which is a wonderful thing. Do you need seeds? If these pop I will have about a half a pack left.

All looking good Stefan! I'm not quite ready to plant the Annuums yet either, but I will in a couple of weeks. Nice that you were able to sell some extra seedlings. I have neighbors and co-workers queued up to take my Annuums when I'm ready to hand them across...

I usually give the majority of my extras away to friends and co-workers, so it is always extra exciting when I actually get some cash back for them. Last year I managed to make back my entire seed cost from selling off sweet pepper and tomato seedlings. This year I bought far more seeds, so I'm hoping I can sell off the supers and hots as well.

When do you usually start your annuums?

I like a bit of a head start, so I usually plant them at the end of the 3rd week in February. That way they're guaranteed to have at least 3 sets of true leaves when I plant them out around the 3rd week in April.

Thanks for all of the wonderful comments and support!

We are having a very exciting weekend here with the seeds popping. Two more varieties from the ones we planted a week ago have germed! I was forced to open up a second tier of my lighting system to accommodate all of the little seedlings that need new homes.

I took out the early jalapeno, tabscos, yellow 7 gigantics, and lemondrops to water them from below.
IMG_1333.JPG

The early jalapeno is looking majestic! I wouldn't be surprised if he starts to flower within a couple of more weeks.
IMG_1337.JPG

When I looked at the seed tray at 6 AM there was nothing there. Then, three hours later, hooks started to show up. Here are the first two maruga scorpion reds.
IMG_1339.JPG

Two brain strain yellows popped as well. I'm going to have to watch out for zombies, because I hear they head straight for the brains and eat 'em.
IMG_1343.JPG

Looks like I hit 8/8 for the Butch T seedlings only 7 days after planting. To be honest, I was expecting a lower germination rate and for it to take another week, but pleasant surprises are always welcome. These will be re-potted later tonight.
IMG_1345.JPG

There are 8 yellow scorps, but I think there were 10 seeds in the pack so it is at 8/10 so far. Still an awesome germination rate at day 7. Some of these may be up-potted tonight, or I may wait for the hooks to show better first.
IMG_1348.JPG

The first two peach bhuts are still there, plus a little hook popping up in the top left cell. I was thinking about up-potting the first two and putting the rest back under the dome to see if I can coax a few more to show up.
IMG_1350.JPG

Same with the lone red 7 gigantic. I think there may be a second hook starting to pop up, but it makes sense to put this back under the dome once I re-pot this little fella.

Thanks for having a look! Like I said, these are exciting times. Jars of Sofia's pixie dust available soon :)

Stefan,
You're right the Jalapeno will be throwing out flowers soon. If I bottom water larger individual pots in a tray I end up pouring the remainder of the water in the house plants so nothing gets wasted.
That Giant 7/Pot sounds dangerous. P-Son sent me some 7/Pot x Red Congo pods that were large., and Hot. I've planted a few of those. Next week I'll be planting the annuums.
I can't wait until the seeding process is over.......then the other vegetable starts............
Enjoy the rest of youe indoor grow...

Awesome update there, Stefan. That pixie dust has worked magic! Great germ rates. Bump if you need it!

Thanks Brent! Gotta keep the pixie dust flying :)

That's a great tip, thanks! I agree, I am waiting to start my tomatoes and other veggies. My favourite is the spring, when the garlic starts to peek out from the mulch and we're getting the peas going. There's nothing like garden fresh veggies!

Jealous of your germination times. So where do i order this pixie dust? Credit card in hand and waiting!

Thanks! Pixie dust sent via telepathy is free of charge ;)

So through the day a bunch of other types have hooked, and 8/8 of the superhots we planted last Sunday have at least a couple of pops. We also put in 2 types of rocotos last Sunday, and I am not sure if they are popping. I am seeing this white thing coming up that doesnt really look like a hook.

Stefan, great update, plants looking very lush and vibrant! Get ready for that jalapeño to take off, I had one of my small ones put out some large pods as I don’t pinch ;) Sofia should be stoked with that, IIRC wasn’t that her plant? The 7’s and lemondrops look great too and I think your pictures are getting better, I have a hard time focusing on multiple plants, I think I do better shooting one at a time but your grouping turned out great. Congrats on dem additional hooks, can’t wait to see how good they do when you finally take them out.

Not sure if you noticed here the first case was already ordered by me, you’ll have to get in line for your dose of pixie dust ;)

They are all her plants ;)

Yup, the first order of pixie dust is definitely coming your way. I have actually never had success this fast before even with sweet peppers. They are popping up as though they are tomato plants!
