Stefan_W's 2013 Pods A-Ripenin'! Glog

I am going to start the new glog for my upcoming growing season on a bit of a personal note. One year ago tomorrow (January 3rd) is the one year anniversary of the day that my daughter was diagnosed with a tumour that is lodged in the middle of her brain. The past year has involved treatments and hospital stays, and there were at least three different points when we were pretty sure she was not going to make it. But she is a fighter, and nothing could keep her down for long.

Sofia has personally planted every pepper and tomato seed that I have started in the past three growing seasons. She beat the odds last year to help me, and once again she is defying what medicine has to say to help me out this year.

We started a jalapeno plant about a week ago just for the sake of watching it grow, because we both love it so much. One of the jalapenos grew to the point that it had its firt couple of leaves, so we transplanted him into a bigger pot. While we were at it I decided to put in some aji lemondrops, partly because they take a long time to fruit up and I wanted to give them a huge head start.

This is the jalapeno plant. I pulled the second one out because we did not need it, and discovered that the roots had grown all of the way down to the bottom of the cell.

Her aim is better than mine, and so it turned out perfectly.

Next up was taking out the lemondrop seeds from peppermania.

I need a few extras of this type, so I asked Sofia to plant two seeds in each of the four cells. Two plants will be for us, and whatever else grows will be given away to good friends.

Two of the three tiers in my lighting stand are currently being used as toy shelves, which is cool for now. The lights are adjustable, and moved down to get close to the seedling.

The heating pad works extremely well, and once the cells are covered the top clouds up in no time.

A happy early jalapeno seedling in his new home. I thought I heard "feeeeeed meeeeee" coming from that direction, but I'm not sure.

That's it for today, folks! Welcome to my new glog :welcome:

Awesome Stefan!
Your yel 7 LRGs look correct. They aren't that big, actually my yel brains where bigger last year, but the shape is correct. They are quite tasty though. Interesting that the red ones are a different shape. That would leave me to believe it's a cross, but who knows.
Glad your pulling pods!

Yeah, I agree. The yellows look right but are small, while the red are the right size but they aren't yellow. Oh well. I'm really happy to be thinking about how to put together some sauces right now.

Thanks for stopping in!

Jamie just fixed me up with his Yellow 7s and dem great mon, so I know you'll enjoy ^_^

Great looking dip, bet it was killer for sure! Love dem pepper colors you are pulling and that Butch-T is pure beauty, so how does she taste?

LOL! I was just looking at your pics of eating a yellow 7 when you were posting this!

I have not cut into the Butch T yet. I'm saving it for tomorrow or early next week, because I want to make a sauce up and need a few more peppers to ripen first. I'll definitely put up a quick pod review once it is done.

The one I did cut into was the lemondrop. That one freaked me out a little bit. I ate a hunk of it straight up, and it was more than just a citrous undertone. To me it tasted almost like biting into a lemon. I only had one small pod so I put it on some nachos I was already making, which was a bit of a waste because lemon does not really go with nachos. What can you do though, after eating a third of a pod there isn't much left. Anyway, I was eating and enjoying it, and all of a sudden my lips tingled a bit out of nowhere. Or at least it seemed like it was out of nowhere, because the lemon taste does not prepare your body for the heat. The really cool thing aside from the taste is that the burn is right on the very front tip of the tongue. Every pepper has a slightly different burn spot, and the front of the tongue is, at least to me, unusual.

Well, this weekend saw the first of my superhots ripen. Pictured here are 7 yellow SPSRGs, 7 lemondrops, 1 Butch-T, and a couple of ghost peppers. The ghost pepper pods are comically small compared to last year, but I guess that is what happens when you have the type of growing season I've had.

I am picking a half dozen or so Tobago Treasures per day as well, and maybe a couple of paprikas. Still very slow for this time of year, but I think things are just starting now and will continue to heat up over the next few weeks.

I hope you all had a great weekend, and try not to be too grumpy heading back in to work tomorrow.

Nice harvest Stefan, my second pull from our ghost had small pods too but I think in my case it's the heavy heat we've had. She's currently full up again for a third pull and I'm hoping they don't ripen early this time as we'll have another 2 months of heat

Glad some are ripening up for you.  One thing about the super hots.  A little goes a long way......Good to know you like the Dixie Golden Giant.  I bought
seeds last fall for it but didn't grow it this year..I will try to get it on next years list, which is getting smaller for tomatoes since I have so many challenges
here, mainly the rodents.

Good luck with your next pull! I only get one kick at the can up here, so what I get is what I get. I never worry though, because I know I will always be well above 100 pods so it is not as if I will ever be short for the year.

I definitely hear you about the superhots. In fact, I am going to cut back the number I am growing next year to make way for more medium and sweet peppers. There is no point in growing as many as I would have if this was a regular harvest year.

I definitely recommend the Dixie to everyone. It has a sweet undertone, and it is less acidic than most of the large beefsteak varieties. Sorry to hear about your rodents, they can be a huge pain.

Nice harvest Stefan!

Those suppers go a long way is right! Made some hot sauce yesterday, don't think the wife will even try it....I only put 3 in it...

I was not planning on posting pics today, but I picked a pod that is so cool I had to share with everyone.

The harvest was normal for the day. A basket of tomatoes, and a mix of treasures, 7 pods, paprikas, a lemondrop, and my first goat pepper of the year.

But one of the not 7 pod yellows ended up being a triple pod! May I can eventually grow a 7 podded 7 pod ;)

I can't imagine how hot this guy will be. That's a lot of pod rolled into one package.

Wow Stefan, I've never seen Siamese Triplets before... how cool is that?!   Respect that Butch T. mon... I found out it'll put the hurt on ya... Cheers!

I'll be making some salsa with that Butch-T tomorrow, I'll let you know how the taste test goes.

Woot woot! We have lift off! Things are kickin in high gear Stefan! That salsa has got me hungry dammit! That's a lot of garlic.....

When I make salsa I start with the basics, fresh tomatoes, etc, and then add doses of garlic that are lethal to anyone who is not Polish. Call it my little secret ;)

Thanks for stopping by!

I bought 7 pod yellows because I heard great things about the taste, and I have been anxiously waiting for them for months. The first plants turned out to have red pods, and it did not faze me. After all, I had two plants and a little variety is a good thing.

Well, I think it is safe to add the "not" tag to these yellow 7s as well. The other plants was red, and this looks pretty orange to me.

I was picking off a few dead leaves and noticed a very ripe bhut at the back of a bunch of other pods. This is the overwintered plant, and it is absolutely loaded like this all over. Can you spot the red bhut?
IMG_3978.JPG

I'll be making a very hot salsa and taking a small sampling of the 7 pod reds and a Butch T straight up. Say a prayer for me.
