Stickman's 2016 Gochu Glog- Transplanting is Finished

Hi All, I'm back again after quite a while and more than a few changes. Health issues got in the way of being active here after Christmas, but I've resolved those and am ready to plug in here again, albeit with less time than I had before. Anyway... on to the chiles!
 
My friends with a CISA farm have started 6 MoA Scotch Bonnets, what I hope are 2 King Nagas and a couple of Jalapenos. I have three 1020 trays worth of 3inch pots planted with 4 varieties of Gochu peppers. I sowed them a week ago and they're just now starting to sprout. I also have 12 pots of Texas Wild Pequins and 6 pots of Guwahati Bhuts planted that haven't started to sprout.
 
In addition to the solar food dryer, I picked up a stainless steel 10-quart pressure cooker at Christmas time, so I'm planning on experimenting with using it to process purees and sauces to hopefully make them more shelf-stable. Any input on that would be gratefully accepted. :)

Good morning campers, and happy July 4th weekend to you all! We've certainly got lots to celebrate here after a couple of weeks of summer temperatures... finally. :dance:    Pretty much all the Annuum and Chinense varieties are blossoming and/or setting pods. The Baccatum and Pube varieties are budding up and aren't far behind.

The pod set on the MoA Bonnet during the cool weather doesn't resemble the true Bonnet shape. but the ones coming along now are right on target.

It's funny how different plants of the same variety can be so different... I planted 2 Naga King plants, and one insisted it was going to blossom even though it didn't have enough leaf canopy to support the effort, thereby becoming a runt. The other one bided its time and worked on pushing out side branching before blossoming. It's the larger and healthier of the two plants.

We got a mild thundershower last night... less than 0.1 inches of rain, but a lot of dropped skirts this morning...

I transplanted all the Nightshades outside before I found a local source for biochar, but I'm definitely gonna prep all the raised beds with it when the season runs its course. Everything planted in it is gonna turn out monster! Bear in mind that these raised beds are 4x20 feet long

Nothing like checking the plants in the morning. I'm going to have try the bio char. I can use all the help I can get, on soil improvement.

My Goat weed started to flower early. Usually I have drastic temp changes, they drop anyways. Not this year. I made the decision to pick flowers. Definitely paid off this time.

That Aji Pinapple is branching nicely. I hope it taste as good as the ones I grew last year. I think I have 12 of them.

Gochu pod's are looking tasty. Can you use them green or wait till ripe?

I second the dawn patrol. When I first joined, nothing better than seeing the dawn patrol on the way to work in the morning.

Definitely looking forward to trying the Aji Pineapples Chuck. The way this one's growing, it looks like it'll wrestle the nearby chiles for space in the raised bed. :)
The Koreans stuff the green ones with a ground meat filling,  roll in flour, dip in beaten egg and fry... their version of chiles rellenos I guess. they're cut into bite-sized pieces and dipped in a vinegar/soy based sauce. I also like eating them fresh and slathered with gochujang.       They have a pretty thick skin though, so mostly they're better ripened and ground to powder... too much of a pain to roast and peel chiles that size, but if you don't have Gochus on hand for this, you could substitute Jalapenos for an Asian take on poppers.   http://www.jencookskorean.com/gochujeon-stuffed-peppers-recipe/

We're finally getting a few tenths of an inch of rain this morning as last night's front moves through, so no Dawn Patrol pics. I don't want to fry another camera. :confused:  I watered well before I left on Saturday, but the weekend was so dry and sunny here that I almost lost the newly transplanted Douglah and the Horseradish. I gave them a good drink at nightfall and they look OK this morning. The rain should help even more. Looking in on the chiles this morning I see that the King Nagas, Bhuts, Moruga, Pequins and Chiltepin are all setting pods, and the Gochus are in full production mode with the exception of the Ttaeng Cho. It looks bushy and healthy, and should be a good producer when it finally starts podding up.
 
We had a great time schmoozing at my Mom's. and the Joojeh Kabobs went over well. I picked wild greens to go with them (Purslane and Lamb's Quarters blanched with Swiss Chard thinnings) and made up a Korean-style dressing to go on them, Macaroni salad made with diced Cucumber, Mint, Cilantro, the juice and zest of a Lemon, good Olive oil and Feta cheese. Dessert was homemade Ginger ice cream. Hopefully you all had a great time as well.

Time for today's Dawn Patrol...
 
It's been so dry here that the grass is dry and crunchy. There's been plenty of rain immediately north and south of us, but I think the Litchfield hills in northwest Connecticut and the southern Berkshires in western Massachusetts divert the rain clouds when they blow in from the southwest. Boy, am I glad we ran a water line out to the community garden last year!

S'right brother! Now that the Gochus are in full production mode, I've gotta break out the organza bags and start working on clean seed for next year. :)
