Sting Vs Heat ?!?!?!

hello :) the title says it all

for me , it is the STING!

i have no trouble drowning my food with Tabasco original sauce but when i put one seed of a jalapeño or any other chili that stings - even if it has LESS SHU than tabasco - on my mouth , i would drink 2 cups of milk and still feel the pain xD

i don't know if it is just me but i prefer the heat not the sting

sting is just some one putting needles in your mouth :)

tell me what ya think

I thought heat is more better ish.. but a jalapeno seed stings? huh didn't know that, I don't really Ike the sting, not so fun as heat, or wait... doesn't eating a pod give you sting and heat? lol

seeds are not hot, whats on the seeds are hot (the cap.) sting vs heat  are they not both closely the same ? I'll take heat & flavor.

I know what you mean. Some peppers give you more heat (habs, serranos, etc...), but in my experience, jalapenos and fresnos give more of a knives slicing your tongue so shreds feeling. It's a paradox I might never be able to understand, but it is what it is. I, personally, gave up bothering with the scoville scale because although habs have much more heat to them, to me, jalapenos just hurt a hell of a lot more.

There are different capsaicinoids, some of the unsuspecting peppers (hotter Jalapenos etc) have more of one type, and vice versa, and they hit different parts of your mouth. This thread ought to explain it better than me:

I agree, a hot Jalapeno pod feels like pins and knives, roasted/fried/BBQ'd ones are too irressistable though :D

I first like to say that I'm nowhere near Neil Smith's tolerance level of burn, but I do find myself having to increase the heat to find that sweet spot of pleasure. Last year I would agree that the jalapeno and even some cherry bombs produced a stinging sensation. Now I hardly feel anything from those peppers. My present level of pleasure is like on a typical large pizza, I'll throw on one Red Bhut, one "TS Scorpion or Choc Bhut" and for sweetener I'll throw in a Black Stinger. My 13 yr old son and I have one of these every weekend, that's what I call a good burn. Now for a good sting I like to throw in a fresh yellow Fatalii into a tuna sandwich. Both burn and sting brings out a bright smile from me.

I'd say you've built up a pretty decent level of heat tolerance Superhot.

One of the downsides to having a good heat tolerance, I've found, is that I now go through hot sauce like it's Ketchup.

And another thing is that low level heat, that others can still feel, no longer registers, or if it does, it only comes across as a vague itchy sensation in my mouth.

Sure we can eat hotter stuff, but it takes hotter and hotter stuff just to get to the same level of enjoyment as before.

Of course, the tolerance level can be reset again, by just laying off of any hot stuff for a couple of weeks.

At least then the hot sauce bills won't be as alarming.;)

Superhot tolerance dies out after 2 weeks?? Man that's a shame...

I wouldn't claim to have Superhot tolerances to heat, but I did build up to a fairly respectable level by eating one to three habs a day for three months straight.

But then because I couldn't find any fresh ones at the market, I went a week to ten days without eating any fresh Habs daily, although I was still using some hot sauce on my food.

And what I found was that I could feel low level heat again and my hot sauces were giving me a better bang for my buck.

If I were to eat one Bhut like Neil, I would probably die. However, if I'm not huffing and puffing a little then I didn't use enough either. Need to shore up your reserves in case of complete catastrophe so I built up enough inventory last season that will last a couple of years. So I don't foresee a decline coming any time soon. I'm not sure where I'll max out, but I imagine that everybody at some point identify that place.

Its all what you're used to. I cook with orange habs, fresno's and 'peno's every day. Used to be a heap more (40 habs a week) but my blow hole suffered. I backed off quite a bit and am now better. I dig the more mild now.

is there no way to permanently increase your tolerance, I'm not asking for superhots daily, but I want to easily consume Habaneros for the rest of my life. Maybe I need to eat one at least once a week for this, sauces can easily substitute for this immunity I assume, I ordered some Yellow7 from Niel today :)

I only splurge one day on the weekend, the other 6 days look something like this. I eat my heavy meal of the day for lunch, and usually with some superhot powder. In the evening, I like to have something light a chicken sandwich with one Caribbean Red and always with a little hunk of cheddar cheese. Texas blue 40 habs a week tops my weekly intake. Who knows where it goes from here. I would like to mention that I am hardly ever sick since I acquired a taste for superhots.

I have decided to hate the sting from Thai hot and annum chillies! The sting is simply annoying, I'll take a habanero any day over birds eye chillies! Lol.
