Not really a stranger, but it makes for a funny story.
Here's what I do know:
They're from Mexico. Birds like to eat them. The guy that grows them here in SoCal has a net to prevent the birds from eating them. They're pretty spicy and give me hiccups if I eat one, but the burn reduces significantly if I drink some water.
I've been grinding them up and using them in dry rubs for ribs. The have a nice burn and a smoky earthy flavor that makes them so unique. People love them.
