Stupid Jerk's stupid grow log for jerks

I think it is safe to say that my girlfriend now regrets bringing home a cayenne plant this July. It sparked an interest in me that has lead me to spend countless hours reading about gardening, filling the windows and balcony with plants and seedlings, purchasing a grow light, and ultimately joining a community garden. I've decided it is time I start documenting my journey.

Grow list:
7 Pot Congo Yellow (Denniz)
7 Pot Douglah
7 Pot Jonah (Denniz)
7 Pot Primo (socalchilehead)
7 Pot Red (Denniz)
7 Pot SR Congo (socalchilehead)
7 Pot Yellow
Bahamian Goat Pepper (socalchilehead)
Biker Billy Jalapeno (ajijoe)
Black Pearl
Black Cobra (smokemaster)
Bhut Jolokia
Butch T (Denniz)
Butch T x Douglah (Denniz)
Carolina Reaper
Cherry
Chile Tepin (socalchilehead)
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
Chocolate Bhut x Yellow 7 pot (socalchilehead)
Chocolate Habanero (ajijoe)
Datil
Fatalii
Fresno (Grocery Store Pod)
Jamaican Hot Chocolate (Pogeys)
Morouga Scorpion (Denniz)
Purple Jalapeno
Red Habanero
Scotch Bonnet (Turns out to be an Anuum, so we'll call these Notch Bonnets)
Scotch Bonnet Foodorama (socalchilehead)
Scotch Bonnet Tobago Yellow (socalchilehead)
Scotch Bonnet Tobago Red (socalchilehead)
Surprise Hot Mix (ajijoe)
Thai (Grocery Store Pod)
White Bullet
Yellow Brainstrain (Denniz)

These are plants that I have obtained as adults:

Aji Yellow (smokemaster)
Habanero (home depot)
Peach Bhut (smokemaster)
White Pearl (smokemaster)
Yellow 7 Pot (smokemaster)

I have a limited amount of space, so most varieties will only have one plant in the ground.

Here is a before picture of the garden:
pwhDt.jpg

It's a 400 sq foot plot and over half of it was filled with nutsedge. I have since pulled out the nutsedge and hopefully most of the roots. Filled a massive wheelbarrow with all that I pulled out. I tried eating one of the tubers because I read they were edible, but I wouldn't recommend it. It was the consistancy of an almond, but the taste of a dirty pine needle. Maybe they are good roasted.

Growing in the ground is going to be a new adventure that I am no way prepared for. I suppose I need to do a soil test before I attempt to amend the soil. Completely organic is the plan, but I've seen a few tiny green balls in the soil, and as far as I know that means slow release Miracle Gro. On the positive side(I think?) there is a bark mulch that is mixed through the entire garden that has started breaking down throughout. You can see some of it near the pavement in the first picture. Not sure what kind of wood it is.

If anyone has any advice, feel free to chime in. I built a fence with 2x8's around the bottom. I plan on having a 2' wide 8" raised bed around the perimeter along with 3 raised beds in the center. The ones in the center may have to wait a while unless I find someone getting rid of some wood. In the mean time I plan on just mounding the ground up in those areas. I see a lot of my neighbors still have chili plants with ripe or ripening pods on them, but I think I'm waiting until mid January to early February to plant them out.(edit: planted out in March) It hasn't frosted since I moved here, but I supposed it is possible.(edit: It happened this year)

Nice harvest. Most of those browns usually turn red in the end. But nice bounce back for your plants
My bi-weekly foliar feeds of fish ferts/seaweed are really helping. I think my soil just needs more time to settle in and develop its web. The plants in the parts that I finished first are doing the best.
By the way, I think that the unknown brown is Pepper Puya, which is from seeds you sent to me. I thought the seedling died, but I must have just lost the tag.

Awesome! I bet that choco hab had some heat to it! The choclates aren't the best fresh IMHO, but they make some great freaking flakes and powder! Your little Thai that could was a nice good news story too...that thing is a shrub!

I can't wait to try it! I'm holding off right now until the lady gets home from work. I'm sure she is going to want a taste of it as well. I just wish we had it last night for the amazing curry she made. I made some garlic naan to go with it. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of either, so no food porn for you guys.

My fiancé and I both tasted a sliver. Flavorful and spicy, a little too hot for her tastes.

I left it on the counter as we went into the living room, then all of a sudden I see my cat bolt by with her tail between her legs. I found her hiding under the bed. Went back into the kitchen and the Hab was flip over and off of the cutting board.

Maybe she learned her lesson and won't try to jump on the counter and eat our food and more.

- That Asian grocery store Thai pepper story is great, testament to your mad farming skills!
- Great to have a protector on the balcony Reaper, that’s awesome!
- lol at cat lesson story, what's her name?
- Nice harvest ^_^
- Plants all looking great, keep up the awesome work mon & have a great weekend!

Wow...that's a lot of placenta! Poor kitty...but you know I guess it's some kitty karma for when they nibble our plant's leaves! The way I sample pods is with a meal. Slice it into small pieces. Eat the first piece straight up, then the rest with the meal. I also do the dumb whole pod at once and make yourself look like a complete idiot method...the first one is much more enjoyable.

Congrats on your harvest!

Love the cat story.

Haven't been seeing any Praying Mantis this year, glad you have a resident ;)

As usual plants look very well.

Have a great weekend!

Hahahahaha my cat only made this mistake ONCE. She used to try and eat food off my plate & one day she got ahold of a piece of chicken with fatalii fire sauce on it....

For about 5 minutes she just darted from cover to cover all around my apartment, trailing the thickest, nastiest string of drool I've ever seen on a cat. She finally came to rest in the back of the pantry where I had to coax it out with a can of tuna. I felt terrible but it was hilarious & she's never touched another piece of my food since!

Sometimes you just gotta learn things the hard way.

Thanks, thanks. Her name is Static.

I didn't feel so bad for her this morning when I caught her chewing on a plant on the balcony.

Thanks! It's strange that it climbed onto my balcony when it was tiny and has just stuck around on the one plant. I'm certainly not complaining!

Hilarious story with a great picture to go with it!! Mine wouldn't come out from under the bed for a few hours. The dog was worried about her and went down there to check her out, but she just slapped him until he left.

Found this poop in my garden.  Anyone know what it is?  Raccoon?

I guess I should wear my glasses while gardening.  Took a bunch of pictures today, but the one of the feces is the only one that didn't come out blurry. Enjoy!

I don't have any corn, but I have some melons. They are also biting huge chunks out of my neighbors tomatoes just as soon as they turn red.

I would sit out there with a shotgun, but I don't think the city of Los Angeles would be happy. Any other ideas on how to keep it away? Piss all around the perimeter? A bag of poison marked "raccoon party mix"?

The bastages pulled over my tomato plants last year repeatedly. A good dose of cayenne powder will deter them.
I guess that's a better idea than shotguns and poison. I'll make a spray of some hot powder.

Just a heaping dose of over the counter cayenne powder. You can buy the huge bulk amounts at costco...
I'll mix in some of the bhut jolokia powder from Trader Joes with it for good measure. I'm not a fan of the heat they used to dehydrate it, tastes a little burned, so I might as well put it to some use.

I never expected my plants to spread out so wide. The few plant on my balcony last fall(my only other growing experience) grew up instead of out, so my spacing was based on that very different circumstance.

The plants I put 2 feet apart are already touching. Going to have to rethink some things next year.

Here are a couple pictures of my balcony plants:

For size reference, the one on the far right is a black cobra/goats weed that is 40" tall and the one next to it is a Yellow Brainstrain that is 30" tall. Brainstrain is just started to pod up, still no flowers on the Cobra.
