food Subbing in dried chiles?

I need help here. I'm making some chili tonight and my recipe uses 4 tbsp of chili powder. However, I was given some nice dried guajillo chiles that I want to use. I was instructed on how to prepare them, but I have no idea how to use these in place of the powder. How many of these guajillo are equal to a tbsp of powder? I don't mean guajillo powder, just regular McCormic Chili Powder (anjo and/or New Mexican with other spices). Once I have a starting ratio, I can balance the flavor out myself. Does anyone know where to start?

Thanks!

Uhhh grind them! Hehe.

:welcome: to the site!

"Chile powder" contains other spices besides just ground chiles. I would use about 3 T. of the ground guajillos and make up the remaining Tbsp with garlic powder, oregano, black pepper, cumin and coriander. If you want to get extra fancy, lightly toast the black peppercorns, cumin and coriander in a frying pan before you grind it.

Thanks for the replies guys. All good suggestion to keep in mind. I did more reseach too and compared my recipe with a similar one that used Anjo's and Guajillo's. Mine cals for 4 tbsp on chili powder and the one I found called for 2 oz of the chiles. I only had 1 oz so I did those with a tbsp of chili powder and yowza! No tweeking needed, I'm hooked! Next time I'll get more dried peppers. And sorry, no recipe to share yet. Need's more testing and heat. It'll be too hot for my grandma but you folks will liken it to water!

Thanks folks. See you around!

TBSP's? Of Guajillos?
There's no measuring with Chili!!!!

I use Guajillos, New Mexicos, Pasilla Negros and Habaneros. Or whatever I have on hand. All dried and powdered and NO measuring, but at least a full cup to two cups of the powder (per 1-2 gallons of chili).

I'll be making a pot on Saturday for the game, maybe I'll post it up here on THP.
