Swamptrout's 2017/2018 vegepod glog

Living in QLD we get hot humid summers and mild winters. After seeing a friend's vegepod i bought myself one to try and grow my peppers all year round without the need to overwinter.

I planted my first batch of seeds 4 months ago (mid winter) and these grew quickly and were transferred to pots to grow out.

A new batch was planted 5 or 6 weeks ago and are 4-5 inches. Some are smaller.

Most are grown and shared with family and friends. I have white ghost, 7 pot choc, choc habs, white peruvian habs, fatali, primotali, apocalypse red, yellow reaper, carolina reaper, moruga scorpion, rocoto manzano red, thai red, capsicum & cayenne.

Sorry paul didn't see the question. Yep they are primotali (so i believe anyway).

Had a crap load more rain last week / start of the week however yesterday hit 33c and is forecast for the same for the next 7 days.

Following yesterday's heat i now have 6 pods which are fiery red and a couple more in transition.

ALL my other plants are also flowering so i was out there assisting with pollination in case the bees missed them. I did over 100 flowers.

When should you pick the peppers?
Last season being my first, i usually picked them 3 days after they turned full colour - no particular reason.

I recently read somewhere that thin walled pods are a result of not leaving pods on the plant long enough to thicken. Some of my plants had thick pods whilst others were thin. Could this of been the reason?

Funny i was talking to my neighbour about fermenting peppers his reply "thats what i do with mine". I didnt even know he grew them. I went and checked them out and came back with a dozen red bhuts, 4 habs and a couple tomatoes. I have enough to start my first ferment.

Primotali looks like a xmas tree, so pretty.

Picked with a few choc douglahs which didnt grow too big before ripening. Pack a punch though. These have been split in to 2 batches (vinegar, garlic and fish sauce / vinegar, water, salt)

After 14 days the first ferment with my primotali and gifted bhuts has finished. Made my first sauce, it is absolutely delicious and perfect. Nothing was added or needed.

Alright, pods just getting ready to swell up and color
Nothing but good things ahead, ST!
Good luck going forward, and Cheers to a
Happy New Year

Fallen behind a bit, but looking good!

Coloured pods are a sight I'll never get tired of seeing in a glog!

Keep up the good work, and a Happy New Year to you!

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everybody. sorry its been a while, I have been away on holidays. Now time for an update.

sadly to say whilst I was away I left my plants & vegetable gardens in the care of my neighbour (not the same neighbour who grows his own peppers - see earlier post).

In that time we had a scorching heat wave and he forgot to water them even though I phoned and reminded him. Tips of the leaves were crispy. To try rectify this he flooded them, this was then followed by another 4 days of storms.

All but 1 plant died (choc douglah). It has lost a lot of leaves but it is still pumping out the pods. We have now had a fair few days of hot sun so some of the pods look sunburnt, but its a brownish purple in colour ?!?!. I will post pictures up later.

I am a little disheartened so not sure I will start again this season.

Sad news Ben. Your grow was looking superb.

I wanted to click the like button, but couldn't do it in the end.

There is still a bit of the season left. If I were in your shoes I'd go get some fast producers (cayenne, jalapeno, etc) from the nursery just to keep the motivation going and start planning next seasons grow.

Maybe spoil yourself with a drip watering system on a timer. I'm going to install one after winter.

All the best with the douglah and chin up mate. At least you know you can grow chillies well.

Sad to hear . I was also away for 2 1/2 weeks and came back to a overgrown pepper patch full of ripe pods.
Hats off to my garden caretaker Jacob. He is bribed with Hot sauce twice a month and all the unwanted seedlings he can handle.

Sorry to hear about the garden. Its a real bummer.

If I end up having as much pods as it looks like I'm gonna have, I won't be able to use them all myself, and I'd be more than happy to send some up your way, if your heart so desires. Let me know!

+1  with what KAOS said, you're in Queensland, so you should definitely be able to squeeze some more plants into the tail end of you season. :D
