T12 light? yea or nea?

Okay so my neighbor works at a light shop. makes lights. he has a stock pile of like 200 T12 lights. I have T8's in my basement growing peppers works great! But say could i start some tomatoes or peppers under some T12's? there 4 feet long 2 light bulbs. I was just wondering i want to sell some plants in the spring for some extra pocket cash!

t8 are better energy-wise and throw the same amount of light as a t12
also the t 12 is now obsolete they are no longer making the fixtures but you can still buy the replacement bulbs
a little peice of info i picked up because i work for Home depot

stick with the t8

t8 yea t12 nea

hope this helps

thanks your friend Joe

Alot of it depends on the price too. If your neighbor is going to give you a great price on the T12 lights I say go with those. I have had good luck using 4 T12 shop light fixtures with 6500k bulbs in my homemade grow box.
But AjiJoe is right, thanks to the epa the T12 fixtures and most of the T12 bulbs are not going to be available starting sometime next month.

Good luck with your grow what ever you decide.

Here's a nice thread about this:

Okay thanks guys. I will just use what i have 1 have 3 4'x2' 4 light bulb lights that are T8. and those 4 i just got. i will probably only use them for this year. So it's just the fact that i might break a light in the middle of a growing season and lose some plant?

yes i absolutely agree, even though i didn't write this down i did consider it, you cant argue with free, just use them until they die

That was an interesting article Paul. T5s would really be the way to go but at a substantial price increase. I went with T12 fixtures for my build not knowing at the time that they were being phased out. They have performed well and hopefully will continue to do so for a while longer. I'm sure there are probably still alot of T12 bulbs out there so who knows. I guess time will tell.

Even with old technology sometimes "free" is the best option, especially on a limited income. I think for someone like Greenhouse4Green who is just starting his business it makes since to start with what you can afford and make improvements as cash flow allows.

Just my 2cents worth.

The T12s will work fine for three months and probably much longer. They may not be as efficient as the newer technology but they still put out sufficient light to start plants. I say use whatever is the most cost effective solution.

Good luck with your grow.

Robert
