chinense the debate about the reaper and primo

I sure don't want to get sucked into the drama. I've followed pepper wars but never comment. I couldn't tell a difference in my limited growing experience. Biggest of my Reapers were bigger than any Primo I had but I only grew 4 Reaper plants & 2 Primos. Most of my pods for both varieties were on the small side & differences were indistinguishable.

One question I have though... if I'm not mistaken, the major beef against the Reaper early on was it's stability. One of my 4 plants (all from the same source) was wonky this year. I've never heard people say anything about Primos being abnormally untrue. If the Reaper is, in fact, a Primo, what would account for all of the reports of instability in the Reapers but not Primos?

i have no idea...
never grew carolina reaper from puckerbutt and primo from Troy.
last year, grew both from pepperlover. imho, they had the same burn (can't taste anything but the heat) and the same shape, but reaper had more stable shapes.

How about the Reapo? lol

As to the stability question of Ed had gotten seed early on in the primos development and hadn't grown it out for as many generations as Troy - that could explain it, however it could also be explained by the primo (and more likely imo) being in the family tree of the reaper - a derivative - not a theft.

Unless someone gets the reaper and the primos genomes mapped I doubt anyone besides Ed will ever know the whole story.

I am with Peter. The majority of my original plants had that smooth, naga look. Even though this is just second hand information, Butch T told me that he got the same thing I did. He asked Ed directly and he told Butch that in the middle of filling the 12,000 seed packets, they accidentally dumped in some other seeds to the pile. Instead of throwing the pile away, they just kept filing packets and sent them out. This would at least explain why people like McDermott, who grow for Ed got perfect looking genetics and many of us paid top dollar for crap. If this is true, it is just one more reason why Ed will never get another $ of my money again. Tom

Tom that could very well explain the "variation" of pods. In the McDermott video "truth about the reaper" he showed a lot of plants on his land that had variation... But at that moment I believe the plant was already stable.

The 7-pot Primo was named by Chris Phillips for the creator, Troy Primeaux, so it's not a generic name, but a very specific one. I believe it was named around 2009. It has, therefore, 4 years of precedence on the Carolina Reaper name.

I will make no comments on the genesis of the Reaper, as there is no evidence one way or another, merely a suggestion from the Capsaicin metabolite profiles. I have posted photos of both together, grown side by side using seeds from both Troy and Ed, and 50% of people get it right, i.e. it`s impossible to tell them apart.

I do believe I can tell them apart, from the flavour and effect, but as I have never done a controlled, blind study, I could easily be fooling myself.

In 2016 the DNA sequences of both will be determined. It is in the works and I expect to see something by fall.

The only way to stop a war like this is to start a new one .

It is now time to get a brand new champion chili!
OK, just for you.  The real hottest pepper in the world is A.J.'s Greater Toe Pepper.  The season after part of my left food was amputated, I separated out the greater toe from the other foot parts.  Wanting a proper burrial for my deer departed piggy, I planted it.  To my surprise, such a volume of capsicum had accumulated in that toe that the real hottest pepper in the world sprang forth.  Unfortunately for my aspirations as a seed dealer, the fruits were without seed.

As a result, A.J.'s Greater Toe Pepper is propagated only by cuttings.  This made it a candidate for a plant patent.  As the patent has not yet been issued, I am selling only fresh pods and a single hot sauce made from A.J.'s Greater Toe Peppers.  The hot sauce is called Satan's Butt Plug.  Observing that shit has been coming out of so many people's mouths, I reasoned that they were putting food up their butts.  Hence, Satan's Butt Plug Hot Sauce is the first suppository hot sauce to ever be offered.

The pricing of Satan's Butt Plug hot sauce is a bit odd.  A single bottle is $100.00, but after that first bottle its only $5.00 per bottle.  The price of the first bottle covers the printing of our 1,800 page disclaimer and contract.  We will not be responsible for the anal reconstructive surgery if you actually put MY TOE UP YOUR ASS.

Yes, I posted this just for humor.  But if you spread the rumor about A.J.'s Greater Toe pepper being planted or used as nutrients for a pepper, I am sure people will call bullshit and give you the next war.  This time with someone who doesnt mind getting hurt by all the bs cause I know it is just a joke.

I am with Nigel. I have primo seeds from Troy and reaper seeds coming through PJ from Currie. They look the same, but are different. My primos taste 10% hotter than the reapers, on average. The reaper has an average red taste that does not stand out. The primo has an excellent taste. It is like comparing a moruga to a brain strains. BSs have a great taste that stand out also. Regardless on what all the tests end up saying, I will keep all my plants separate. I have done the blind taste test for fun, and after putting 5 of each to test, I only messed up once. If anyone can do it, I would bet Nigel can do it too! You should do a video but instead of eating whole peppers, just eat a slice from each pepper. I bet you would get most every one right.
Who knows, if the primo was used to become a reaper, it must have gone through a couple of generations of bad selection that ended up being not as good tasting. Culturally, I found that reapers set more consistently. I have a time in early spring where I will hand pollinate all the flowers every morning, yet a fraction of the flowers set pods. About 6 weeks later, they start setting consistently. The primos have an extended period where they don't set, but the reapers never go through this bad set time. If Ed selected plants at all for production, this would explain this.

Serious hat back on.  I think there is enough variance in most of the newer peppers that you could do what Butch Taylor did with Trinidad Scorpion to come up with something fairly unique.

All I can say is; I have had very little success growing either...

I can say that about... all peppers. :mope:

I'll probably take you up on it maybe a sauce trade. :)

Boss,

I find that hard to believe.

But seriously, my other peppers grow like weeds, look at my glog.

Reapers and Primos just refuse to produce for me.

Started my Reaper plant about 2 months ago and just started germining my primo seeds last week....SO WE WILL SEE!!! On a side note i also picked up Chocolate Primo Reaper seeds from Butch T. So.......the peppers get along fine, why cant we?
