The fabric pots - question.

So after some reading and checking out home depot I see the material looks pretty much like your run of the mill felt.

I'm wondering if using just your ordinary felt would be pretty much the same.

I found a big roll of the contractors landscape fab at lowes for like $80.. Not bad. BUT I have access to a big FREE roll of felt. If there's a huge difference no biggy it's only $80 but if it's close I may as well save the cash and put it into the T5s I'm pining over.

Thoughts/ opinions/ witty commentary?

MMM pretty sure people have done it and it works alright. 
 
If you can purchase the pots for a couple bucks each, though, it's not like your gunna be breaking the bank to purchase the pre-made ones though. 
 
They do work great - I use geopots and they're definitely better than regular pots. 
 
I can't find a thing I seen on making your own felt pots, if I remember right they used liquid nails to glue it together. I have used Geopots and smart pots the Geopots in Tan don't last in the sun.IMO. The black does and the smart pots I had for 4 years now and still doing well. I have some contractors landscape fab. that I plan on using next year I thought I would use a wood frame to make a very long pot along the side of my GH, now I just got to get some cheap wood to do it. :)

@ Aaron - I don't know about regular felt. The stuff smart pot, root pouch, dirt pot, etc etc use is called Non-woven polypropylene. It's a geotextile. You can buy it in big rolls as pond liner. The rolls aren't cheap but you could make a ton of pots from one roll.

And the way I spaced it out I'll get 30 x 6 gallon cylindrical pots + around 40 4"x6" indoor starters! Not bad for $60 considering the cheapest I found the 5g ones online for was $4... so that saves me $60 plus I get a bunch of free minis.
 
As an aside, I found that cylindrically shaped pots made more economical use of the fabric rather than a tapered pot.
 
That should use up just about every square inch AND I think the small sized ones will probably do a great job of preventing the indoor starts from becoming root-bound before I put them out in the spring.
 
 
Any opinions on the underlined above? Think it will make much of a difference?
 
Should work but one thing the Felt pots of they get "roots bound" they are hard to get plants out. The trick I think is push in from all sides to loosen them before trying to get them out.

Thanks Coheed! Ok cool, so its the pond underlayment that I'm looking for. The link you posted is for the 4oz thickness, I've found 8oz at .25 a square foot so I'll be able to sub that in and still only spend 56$

I wish! I saw your links in the other thread. Sucks they don't ship to Canada... but even if they did I'd bet the shipping would be easily $50 :(
 
I've been scouring the web for premade cheapos but so far the best deal I've found in Canada was ~3.50 + $10 to ship..
 
 
 
Would be sweet to find them cheap up here but I don't mind making them. My hobby budget is pretty limited because I scuba dive and it drains the majority the spare cash (happily--diving is my favourite thing in the world... next to my better half of course ). So I have a $300 limit this season to start out and I'm cutting that in half for 2015.

Yep pond underlayment. I'm not sure how much thicker the 8oz is (I'm going to assume double) but yes that is the material you need. Weed blocking polypropylene wouldn't be able to handle the weight of the soil, at least not a heavy 5 or 7 gallon anyways.
