The Holy Grail of Beer?

Anyone tried this?

120 minute IPA

It's about 20% ABV and loaded, and I mean LOADED with hops. I've had extreme high alcohol beers before and they are usually so sweet you can hardly drink 'em but this strikes a nice balance between extreme hops and extreme sweet/alcohlol.

At 8-10 bucks a bottle it's not something you want to drink often, but for special occasions. it's really special.

I love Dogfish Head Brewery. Next up is this one:

Midas Touch Golden Elixir

Never tried that.
For me it was a beer I found over in Germany, the Park Perminator. Wicked strong stuff with great taste!

i've never tried that one yet...the price has been the main deterrent. i plan on trying it one day..it's just that there are a lot of other beers in the same price range that i don't buy often but come in larger bottles. ie rogue xs imperial stout.. i am going to try it one of these weekends.. i just try not to buy too many really expensive bottles at once. maybe one or two and then some other beers to drink.

couple of things. (you knew i would chime in)

dfh 120 is not bad, but yeah man, at 8-10 dollars a bottle would you rather drink 1 of those or 4 90 minutes? thats not even a choice for me. :hell: hell, we cant even buy 120 minute here, but if we could, i wouldnt buy it. world wide stout on the other hand.....

as for the rogue "XS" or "extra shit" series, they are good, hell, maybe even great beers, but they are packaged in that ridiculous ceramic bottle like they are something that is holy. i hear the bottle actually costs rogue 2 or 3 dollars, so yeah, you can imagine that is built into the cost. the beer inside of them is really good stuff, but come on, 14 dollars for a 750? no thanks. the only ceramic i have ever drank is the i2pa, and the imperial pilsner. i have a couple of the old crustaceans in 12 oz bottles, and my 12 ozers of rogue imp stout is long gone. to sum up - the imperial stout is the best of the bunch, but is it worth 14 dollars? eh. you can make that choice. if rouge would bottle those beers in bottles, i would drink alot of them, as is, i havent bought one in years. hell, i dont even drink rogue beer anymore. some of their 22s are good though, but i just would rather drink victory or bells.. i really dont have much of a taste for west coast beers like i used to..

it is a lot for a single beer...especially a 12 oz. but i just want to try (almost) every beer i can. there are a few i will just trust my gut instinct and avoid hah.. i haven't had the world wide stout for the same reason. it's just that at $12 a bottle..it's on the back-burner.

as for the rogue..same deal really (but yes i agree..those bottles have to add a dollar or two to the price) was going to skip the old crustacean because i'm not a big fan of barleywine style ales. that and the price killed off the idea of trying that one. i love imperial stouts though, and am a fan of a few of the rogue beers. the shakespeare stout is my favorite.

can't buy victory or bells over here on this coast (that i know of) i did enjoy that kalamazoo stout though.

ps. the rogue xs beers are a couple bucks cheaper down here than they are up there i guess. :hell: they are still 12 bucks though. not an amount i like to spend on a single bottle of beer.

ill spend 18 dollars on an allagash limited edition beer all day long. the rogue ones just put me off.

old crustacean is a ridiculous barley wine. its so bitter it will make your face twist and contort. ahh how i love thee, old crustacean. i drank a bottle a few weeks ago that was 3 or 4 years old, and it was fabulous. i like it fresh though, when its mind numbing.

oh, and do yourself a favor and buy a world wide stout. open it, get a cigar, and take an hour to smoke the cigar and drink that bottle. you will not regret that decision. it is such a fantastic beer, and when aged it is almost near perfection. it has a nice sweetness that makes the beer just awesome.

perhaps i'll do that this weekend (my birthday is friday).

not sure if i've seen any limited release allagash. have tried the white and dubbel reserve. i liked the white but felt slightly let down with the dubbel. mainly because i liked the white a lot, have liked other dubbels, and theirs smelled great..just didn't taste quit as good. then again i drank it the same day i bought it...i'm sure it could use some aging.

speaking of aged beers..i still have my collection going. the first beers (3 bottles of old stock ale 06 and a bottle of old rasputin) have been sitting in the back of my closet in the dark since december now. have since added (a month or two later) a bottle of rochefort 10, 3 bottles of burton baton, a bottle of twin sisters double ipa and 07 oak aged imperial stout from left hand brewing co. i figure after a year, i'll open up one of the old stock ales and a burton baton since i have a few of each of those. can't wait to try them all.

anyone have a time machine? :hell:

burton may be interesting, but double IPAs are not something you want to age, unless you dont like the hop profile. the left hand probably will be bad. i didnt like it when i had it.. and i couldnt imagine it after a year. if you liked it, then hey man, if its good enough for you, its good enough for me :hell:

i'm just going by the fact that they said you could age it on BA. i thought it was pretty damn good myself (though part of that is because i do enjoy the hoppy flavor) so i figured it would be really good after a bit of time goes by. i guess if it will lose some of that hop flavor is going to be lost in all the flavors blending or whatever..then i could not like it as much. i guess only time will tell...i hope it works out though..they aren't going to make this stuff ever again.

Dogfish Head

Hey guys, I am a big fan of DFH beers. I love the 120 but I agree with you Ross if I have the choice between 3 90min or one 120. I go 90min. Have you tried the Raison D' Extra? The $12 a bottle one, not the $2.75 one. I think the name is a little different but I get them confused. Also, they have recently come out with a Black and Blue. Anyone had this or know anything about it? Oh and for what it's worth my holy grail of beer is Samichlaus.

never had black and blue. hoping to see that next time i go to the store..

ive never drank extra because i have a bottle of it from 2002 (corked 750ml) and i refuse to drink the 12 oz version of it before i try the real version.

i haven't had the black and blue or red and white. both are available here..but i wasn't sure what they were at the time and didn't buy either.

tried that raison d'etre or however it goes. i tried it sometime last year and wasn't a big fan of it..but i was just starting to learn about lots of styles of beer and hadn't really gotten into belgian style ales..so perhaps i'd like it now. haven't tried the d'extra though.

red and white is really good. fruity, almost like drinking a light pinot nior. its good stuff.

the d'etre is something that is uh... different, they are fabulous with a couple of years age on them.

hmm i guess it's going to be a dfh weekend. i'm definitely trying the wws and a cigar...ha hopefully i can get one of my roommates to buy the cigars or beer since it'll be my bday. :( also, thinking of giving that red and white a go.

chuk, did you ever try the midas touch? it took me a while to even realize that was a dfh beer...now i have one in my fridge, but i haven't had it yet.

get you a romeo y julieta maduro cigar. go to the tinderbox and tell them you want that. or something comprable. they are like 5-7 dollars a peice, i forgot. whatever you do , dont skimp on the cigar either. a good cigar is like a good beer, costs $$$.

i cant wait to see what you think of the midas touch, haha. i think i drain poured that one

cool...i'll see if they have that there. total wine and more seems to have a decent selection..though i know of a few nice cigar stores around here too. so far i've smoked a cohiba toro..it came in a silver tube as opposed to some of the other cohibas they had. i liked that one..then i bought a hoyo de monterrey excalibur 1066. that hoyo was alright..i wanted to try a dark cigar so i picked that one randomly. it felt a little more harsh than the cohiba. maybe it was just spicy or something?

hah yea..i'm not too sure what to expect from that midas touch. seems like it will be a strange one. i clicked that link chuk posted, and it sounds like it's fairly complex tasting. they compared it very much to wine. (i'm not the biggest fan of wine..though i know very little about it.)

thanks...i'm hoping it'll be a good one. don't see why it wouldn't. 4 day weekend + good beers + good cigar + possibly hanging out with one of my old best friends i haven't seen in over 10 years.

the dark cigars are harsher than the lighter ones. but a huge imperial stout like wws will over power a lighter smoke.

never bought any cigars at total wine, they have a limited selection here, but if they are in a humidor, it should be fine.

i was drinking a glass of unibroue don de dieu with the hoyo. went alright i guess...the cigar seemed harsh at first then seemed to mellow out, or i just got used to it.

the cigars at total wine are all in this walk in humidor. not sure if they have the one you mentioned or not..but i'll check. i'm not working friday, so if they don't have it, i'll try a local shop thats close to my house. if the beer store doesn't have wws, i'll probably just drink one of the old rasputins i have that i'm not aging.

I brought back 4 bottles of that from New Orleans last month. I haven't cracked any of 'em yet. You can't get that stuff in Texas.

I liked the Midas Touch the first time I had it but the second batch had a strange funk that put me off. Seems to be some QC issues from batch to batch. I have tried a 3rd batch and it didn't have that bad aftertasste so hopefully the problem has been corrected.

It's a very complex, golden beer that is almost like a chardonay.
