The hornworm......

As previously stated, the adult moth lays the eggs on the leaves of the plant during the night. The caterpillars grow very quickly and are good at remaining undetected until they are quite large. The last stage before pupation is the stage that eats an unbelievable amount, it is at this point they can't hide themselves very well anymore. Eggs and larvae will not survive in the soil, or without food.
 
Just found one covered in parasitic wasp pupae... Totally just left him in a cup so they could finish their business and protect my garden!
