chinense This Foodarama Scotch Bonnet spanked me and made me cry for my Mommy

This is all of it I could eat over the course of breakfast and lunch today. My Yellow 7s are not as hot as this chile:

you must have stressed the plant to its limits. i had a foodrama yellow bonnet yesterday, where does one even start to describe its tasty sweetness? mine wasn't as hot, probably due to the last month of being in the pepper spa resort and getting all that lovin' and all that ample watering.

Thanks Guys!

I agree, BC, the Foodarama is an awesome chile. I've noticed on the cooking shows that even the Jamaican restaurants seem to use them rather than the traditional Bonnets. Plenty of "bang for your buck" and a more consistent high heat...I've found that it takes a while for the "True Jamaican" to really get up to full heat level, for me just the very last few waves of pods in the season have any real heat at all...but they're just so pretty that I have to grow them anyway!

hey wc, hard to tell from the pic, with all dental damage, but does your foodrama pods have the bonnet shape? mine definitely did not and that was a disappointment. i must say that plants is just a fabulous looking plant with very large foliage. i have one in dwc that i had to cut back as some of the branches were approaching 3 feet.

i also grew peppermania's original yellow bonnet, now those pods look like bonnets. all the pods, all consistent in shape but not as sweet as the foodrama. my other yellow bonnet are from seeds harvested from a local grocer, they taste like a bonnet, not as sweet as the foodrama but on par with the original.

hard to beat a yellow bonnet for flavour.

Dang Gary are you just nibbling on that bad boy all day. The oils look thick on that baby :fireball:

Hey Jamie!

I started on it at around 8:00 in the morning, and finally gave up right after I took the photo, around 1:00. At that point there were some very disturbing things going on in my gut, and I knew it was time to quit. Neil Smith I'm not!

The Nagabrain plant is looking like an insane Christmas tree, with all the red pods. I'm purposely not picking them until most all of them are ripe, just for the photo op...

Hey BC!

Most of the pods are not Bonnet-shaped, but probably 1/4 of the plants do produce the traditionally-shaped pods. At first, I too, was unhappy about the shape of the Foodarama pods, but when it became apparent that it is such a vastly different chile than the TJSB (as Beth Boyd calls it) the shape seemed more appropriate. If I had to compare its shape to another well-known chile, I would say maybe a yellow version of the classic Congo Trinidad, but with a more refined flavor and aroma. Here's a few of my Foodarama pods:

Some others of them are more 7 Pot-shaped.

Last year I grew 12 plants of the Peppermania Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. This year I have 16, so...Me likey. I am also trying several of the traditional Caribbean yellow chinenses, including Bonda ma Jacques, Bahamian Goat, and Seven Pot Yellow, and finding some that are more robust, some that are more productive, and some that are consistently quite a bit hotter than Beth's Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. But I will probably grow several plants of it every year, despite its eccentricities, because it's so cool-looking and tasty...

As an aside, I've found that when pureed with a little freshly-squeezed lime juice, the aroma of the True Jamaican really "pops," much more so than a freshly-cut pod:

must have been a yellow season, i got that bug in 2011. i wasn't impressed with bonda ma jacques, i found it tasted more like a habanero. i have been intrigued by the [background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Bahamian Goat by all the talk on THP but after seeing some reviews it too may taste more like a hab - maybe saying tastes like a hab may be incorrect because i do like the taste of orange habs but after having a caribbean red yesterday i am thinking of letting the c/r to run its course and perhaps die off. all my yellow bhuts died.[/background]

Thanks for the pix BC! Nice pod porn, especially the Yellow 7.

Yeah, it looks like we've both been digging the Caribbean yellows lately! When I'm reaching for fresh chiles to go with a meal it seems like I always go for one of them...or some type of little red bird pepper (my longest-running chile love). I'm thinking next season will be much the same... So I've been visualizing my big in-ground garden with long rows of Scotch Bonnets, Bonda ma Jacques, Bahamian Goats, and Yellow 7s, with a nice decorative border of Prik Kee Nue, Texas Piquin, and Siling Labuyo....

Thanks for stopping by, and I enjoyed seeing some of your grow!
