Well its finaly warmed up.

No more frosts, 20 deg c days.

Time to move the plants from the fish tank in the bar room to the sunshine outside.

So far i have a Tobago Seasoning that is very strong and healthy. I even stepped it up into a bigger pot. Its going to be a ripper of a plant:

There are 2 Bhut Jalokia's that were competing for space and light on either side of the Tobago Seasoning in the fish tank. They have grown a bit crooked as a result and are a bit wobbly but they will just have to harden up won't they.

The Fetalli plant is short and compact. Im hoping with a bit of sunshine it will take off. You can see the baby 7 Pot behind it.

I have just planted some more seeds. Hot Cherry, Hot Lemon, Devils Tongue and White Habanero.

I might get myself some seeds for a good Jalapeno plant too.

Can anyone recomend a really good veriety to slice and preserve that arnt too hot. The better half likes them but only if there not to hot.

hi Tony,
your plants are happy buggers I see, good start so far.
I would recommend the Grande Hybrid Jalapeno from Tomato Growers Supply, it is prolific,just enough heat to let ya know its mexican and the peppers are huge.
{hold back water day before picking for more heat}
we have about 100 or so plants in the field now,excellent yield.

Hey Tony, how long have those plants been growing for? I am still waiting for germination (naga,choc hab, medusa,red savina,orange hab). Am i too late??

No mate..... do a search and find my thread of plants last year. They all got sowen direct in about september i think. I got a million orange habs of one small sized plant, it was a bit scary actually.

I put those seeds in dirt in about april or may i think. I did have a 7 Pot, Devils Tongue and TD Scorpion growing from march but the cold and lack of sunlight due to me not having time to move them in and out killed them.

Thats what you get working as an engineer in the service industry in the coal mines....... more work than one can handle. My shortest day last week was an 11 hr day up to 16 hrs on wednesday

Will save the scorpion seeds for next year and grow the 7 Pot this year.

Ooooooooo im excited.

Really cant wait for the first flower

Looks nice. Somehow I envy you for the chance to start your season now when ours is approaching its end. Can't complain, but I know I will probably start my plants extra early for 2009, because I can't wait!!!

Well wont be doing the "grow through winter" thing again.

Put the plants in filtered overcast light for 48 hrs and they all shit themselves.

The littls 7 pot is dead, the Fetalli is all but dead. The 2 Bhut Jalokias have half theit leaves burnt off and the Tobago seasoning is the only one looking healthy, minus some scorched leaves.

It got to a whole 20 deg.

Will stick to direct sowing them when it warms up in future.

I'm a bit nervous about my plants now....

I have had them under grow lights for a few weeks and was about to start putting them outside for short periods now it is warming up..

I will just have to wait and see....

Is it better to have them in bigger pots (say 6") when you start to condition them to the outside, as mine are currently in 3" Pots???

I had my Bhut Jolokias ect in a fish tank over winter. They grew so well and on their first outing to sunlight on a fine 20 deg day, the sun burnt all the leaves off them. Killed the Trinidad 7 Pot that was still small, killed the Fetalli but the 2 Bhuts and a Trinidad Tobago Seasoning plant lived....... they were nothing but sticks but they have since sent out fresh shoots. Fingers crossed they survive.

The Goatsweed planti grew last year survived the winter so i cut it back and its sending fresh shoots and flowers out all over the place..... top to bottom. Some branched had died so they just got cut off where they were still green

Now the scary one...... the orange hab. I left the plant to rot over winter. There were about 30 peppers left on it when all the leaves fell off. They went black and fell off. I didnt water it once, didnt cut it back, nothin. I went and checked it a couple of weeks back and there were some buds forming so i cut it back fairly harshly and started watering it again.

It now has about 100 flowers on it, some are already becoming chillis. This one is going to produce big time.

I purchased seeds from the tomatoe growers mob in the states and the australian customs picked them up.

They sent me a nice letter saying i has 2 choices...... pay $50 to have them posted back or have them destroyed for free.

Not happy.

I have put seeds in the ground for 7 Pot, Devils Tongue, fetalli, whire habs, Jalapinos and some hot lemon too i think

Will have to wait and see what comes up

It will be very interesting to see how the orange hab produces in it's second year.

I've never seen an over wintered plant so this will be a good learning curve for us.....umm, i mean you.....hehe

I still remember the day i got that plant.... 4 little babies jammed into a 3 inch pot, very unhappy.... and now between the 2 of us and the 4 plants we probably got 500 pods.....

your plants look really healthy and I am glad you guys down under are getting ready for another growing season...we, up here in the northern hemisphere will live thru the winter on your pictures...

the plants that were sunscalded will recover and produce well later in the season...I have probably 50-75 plants that were badly scalded this season and all of them recovered and are producing pods now...they were as you say, just sticks but now they are bushy, healthy and producing fruit...

I know you know, but you have to harden off gradually...starting with an hour or less for the first few days then increasing the time every few days....

I hardened off all my plants in 3" containers this year and they did really well when I transplanted them into 5 gallon containers...that being said, they may do better in a larger pot...it all depends on how big the root balls are...if you are concerned about the plants being root bound, transplant a couple to the 6" pots and notice if the roots are filling up the 3" containers...

by the way, 2nd year my O. Hab has already produced 600 pods and there are another 200-300 on the plant now...I was hoping to get 1,000 off the plant but may fall a couple hundred short

It produced a good 300 or more last year, i gave a lot away.... bags of them.

Its warming up nicly here and the plants are going well.

The burnt Tobago Seasoning came back with bells on and is producing peppers.......... however.

I dont think its a tobago seasoning. To my un-edumicated knowledge, this pepper should be similar to a Habanero. THese look more like Naga's

If anyone recognises these peppers a bit of info would be great. I got the seeds from Trinni last year.

The Bhut Jalokia plants came back from the sun shock. Starting to flower now.... im really excited about this one!

And the orange hab that i over wintered (read... forgot about and left for dead) is making me nervous. the funny thing is there are about 50 small Orange hab plants growing self sown growing in the soil below the folage. I have plucked a few out and will grow them to see what they produce, seeing as the plant sat between a Slavinia Red and Chocolate Hab. Cound be interesting.

Will plant them in the garden in front of the house and see if any kids pick them for a snack on the way home from school

And my favorite plant........ the Goastweed!

Its about 5 1/2' tall now and sprouting peppers all over.

Its the most attractive and intreeging plant! The soft velvel like fur on the branches and leaves and the upright peppers that are black and turn red. Bloody hot too with a deep slightly bitter flavour. I have been using these in my curries and work wonderfly. A good burn!

A Chilli plant sprouted at the base of this plant a few weeks back...... obviously self sown. I let it go to see what it may grow to bee and i noticed hair. So ive kept it and have it in a pot growing strong. I may plant it besides the existing one, father and son
