Tonystarks1311s second attempt.

Hey everyone,

I am a noob at this, I was basically having a go to see if I can get some seeds to shoot. It's very late in the season here so I thought I'd see if I can get my technique right in preparation for next summer. 2 Dorset Nagas and 2 Birdseyes.

15 days in and 2 Dorset Nagas have shot, but one broke in half unfortunately. The 2nd one is alive and well. Can I put it in a bigger pot and place it outside immediately? It's in a jiffy pod.

Knowing Melbourne we still have 2 months of 30 degree weather so I'll see what happens.

I'll add some photos when I'm on my computer.

Cheers

Thanks a lot.

Sorry if I am asking stupid questions that have been answered multiple times.

There is a lot of great info out there about growing these things.

I think it's a lot like raising kids. Nearly anybody can plant the seeds, but everyone has their own way of doing things so just use the information at hand as best you can and fumble your way through until you get it down.

Cheers

ok, some progress today.

I put the Naga that sprouted, into a small pot to get it off the heat mat. By the time I got home from work another had started from the same pod. Do i just leave them both for now?

Here you can see one of the Birdseyes has shot too, but it seems to be broken like the 1st Naga was. Is this a mistake I have made or is it luck of the draw? It's thrilling to see some action.

And finally, a pic of my sophisticated, $10 total cost setup.

Thanks for the help guys.

Couple of noob questions:

When multiple seeds sprout from the same pod, do I just leave them alone for now and wait until I can see which is the strongest, or is it better to cull one of them immediately?

And, when the stems break before they are out of the dirt, is that because the soil is too tight or are some just duds like that? I ask because 2 have done it now.

It's funny, I bought the Naga seeds and I read they can be temperamental and tricky for beginners so I got some Birdseye's too. Now the Birdseyes are doing nothing and the Nagas are sprouting flat out. Still early days!

Cheers

Hello gents.

Some more progress: both the Naga seedlings are into small pots and seem to be going well. they both have 2 sprouts from the pod (one is still emerging).

Also, after no activity with the Birdseyes curiosity got the better of me so i busted open the jiffy pods and had a look:

Mouldy. The seeds were way too deep and the soil was packed too tightly. Ah well, you live and learn.

Here is a pic of a plant my Mrs got about 18 months ago. She picked it once and after/during winter it looked like it was dead. 6 months later:

I'm going to pick it today and attempt to harvest the seeds from the nicest looking chili.

apologies for the sideways photos.

Cheers

Just some progress photos.

They live outside full time now. They seem to be going OK, as far as I can tell anyway. It rained all day today so they got soaked through but I'll check them out in the morning.

Wow, that really sucks!
It does, but at the end of the day I got the seeds to shoot which was my goal. It's too late in the season here, basically the end of the season, but I know for next spring to keep the seedlings up off the ground. Now that I have a vague idea of what I am doing (getting the seeds to sprout) i'll outlay a bit more money and try to get a bunch going.

Having said that I might go out tonight with a torch and stomp out every snail I see.

Cheers
