Too cold?

Just bought some new plants and accidently left them outside. It got 40 last night and wondering what kind of damage has occured?

More than likely, no damage. As long as it didn't get down to frost level. Now if you did this a few nights then I could see them getting stunted to grow for a while. Even then they would more than likely recover just fine after a week or two...

When you get to 37/38 degrees you get the weather phenomenon "light frost" where somehow you get a mild frost well above freezing.     As long as you didn't have frost on your vehicle/furniture in the morning you will be fine.  As soon as the soil is consistently above 50 degrees you'll be alright and the plants will recover.

We as gardeners tend to overthink things.

Not saying it is healthy, but have seen scorpion get hit by frost, loose all leaves, and look like a green stick before it bounced back.
