Too late to top?

Howdy ya'll,
 
   As I have said before I am late to the game this year, my plants were not potted until May.  Now they are about a foot tall and growing quickly. 
 
I live in Zone: 8a 
 
I want to top my peppers but am afraid of the limited time I have left.  Estimated last frost date this year is between November 15-30th.   If I topped now would that give my peppers enough time to recover and produce?   They are looking a little spindly right now. 
 
Thanks in advanced.  I plan on starting a glog here soon to keep track of everything.

Im in Eastern Pa and mine look similar now. Planted about mod May. I have three that took off this week though. Really bushy. A red savina, chocolate bhut and ts moruga.
I am just letting nature take course now.The savina is even still in a 3 gallon pot but doing so well I am not moving it unless I have to.
