Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

_DSC1215a_zps824b6b30.jpg

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

Hey Tristen, Good to hear from you!

Those 2017 pods came from a plant that threw
several yellow pods and then started making
white ones. I included them in the packet I sent
because I knew you were looking for yellow pods
in the cross.

I can't believe the F8 took that long to germinate.
Both the F8 I'm growing emerged in two weeks
or less. But I'm glad it finally made it for ya!

I have high hopes for the F8 Yellow I'm growing. I
was surprised by the purple pods in F5, and then
the Yellow in F8. And I thought we had settled into
a white pod cross for a couple of generations. Will
be interesting to see what happens next.

Good luck to you, my friend. I hope those plants
produce well for you. And I hope the smoke from
the fires in Oz haven't affected you too much in NZ.
Thanks Paul!!

The plants are all at varying stages ... I am planning on overwintering them all (some of them for the second year)

I dwarfed a few of them over the previous winter and they took a while to bounce back but they are flowering now. I have roughly 8 weeks left of warm weather so not holding out much hope of a crop.

The greenhouse has been getting too hot even with the vents open and all flowers dropping so still work to be done there figuring out what to do.

Good news is I am looking at getting a specialised grow LED panel built for my seedlings this year and actually hopefully get them off to a decent (and cheap start) in June or July (as opposed to November like this past year)

The only thing the bushfires are doing here Paul is creating a little haze and more intense sunrises and sunsets from the residual tiny ash particles blowing over luckily, (and more dust on cars etc) so we have nothing to complain about.
If you didn't know about the fires you would just think it was normal really.

Your greenhouse should help with that, Tristen.

Will you put them in the greenhouse, or are they in the ground?

That's a problem here, as well. The greenhouse seems to
work best in the Spring and Fall, when the plants just need
a break from cool nights and winds.

Hey, mate! An LED panel sounds like a good investment.
I hope you will get a chance to post a few pics of your efforts!

I forgot to ask in my previous post - How are the in-ground
Rocotos doing?

There are the f6 and f5 I have going (f6 in front of the skateboard)
Plus the in ground pubecens... 4-5 years old now and one plant (of the three) is over 6feet tall and around 8 feet wide they all have hundreds of pods and hundreds more flowers ... Obviously the perfect varieties for our climate here

That is super impressive, Tristen! A one-plant jungle!

Your TT look good - nice color. Looks like there may
be a flower or two trying to set a pod on the F6.

The sun looks so great. I wish we had some sun  :mope:

Looking good. Nice color and the typical rangy
growth habit. Hopefully there will be a bunch of
pods forthcoming!

Growing just two Trippaul Threat F8 this
season. Devv’s White on the left, my own
yellow on the right. The yellow ones are
three days behind:

Meanwhile.

I mentioned that I had found a bunch of
whole seeds in a jar of the Trippaul Threat ‘F1’
from the 2014 grow season. The pods were
dried at 135*F and then ground with a coffee
grinder, but a lot of seeds made it through
unscathed. I never gave it another thought
since then. Same for the F2 and F3.

I was checking on the powders a while back,
and noticed the F2 seeds. They looked pretty good,
so I put 12 of them in 6 rockwool cubes and
set them aside on a heating duct in my garage,
thinking nothing would come of it. You probably
have figured out what I am going to say next

This seedling would be an F3. The current TT strain
is descended from TT F2 seeds that Trippa sent me along
with the F1 seed. I never grew out my own F2 seeds,
just the F3.

I am excited for this because now I have another
F3 to grow out and isolate to get a ‘truer’ strain.
Tristen’s F2 seed produced bright yellow F3 pods.

Maybe I will be lucky and get more than one
to grow out, hopefully generating Trippaul Threat v.2!
I will pay more attention to isolating this time around.

Nice work Paul ... I am not even sure I have any F1 seed left now [emoji848]

I have had a couple of pods set finally but a lot of blossom drop especially on my douglah ... But one thing I have certainly noticed is that Trippaul threat certainly seems to be a lot more tolerant of greenhouse extreme temps then almost every other variety I have going.
These pods are set on my f6 phenotype I have.
Currently I have 4 generations growing from f5 through to f8

Hey, Tristen! Those are great looking pods!

I see that same hardiness here in our climate,
as well. A very desirable trait, for sure!

I have some more of the seeds I took from the
pods from the plant I grew out of the F1 seeds
you sent. I guess that makes the seeds F2, and
the seedlings F3. At any rate, I will send you
some of them.

Good news in the next post!

Awesome results with those rockwool cubes Paul! I might grab some myself.

I only tried them out for the first time last season,
after seeing others on the forum having great
success with them. I think they are worth a try!

Hey Paul, I have a question for ya, on your double solo cup setups , do you put a rock or some kind of spacer in the bottom of the watering cup?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No, Bryan. I know Khang Starr does something
like that, but he also lets roots grow down into
the reservoir. I usually take the reservoir cup off
a day after watering to air prune the roots and
make a bushier root ball.

One for the books. All five (yeah, I miscounted)
Grodan Rockwool cubes have sprouted a seedling.

These from 1/28, starting to show some purple shading:

The seeds are from 2014, retrieved from dried and
ground pods from Tristen’s first generation seeds.
They were dried at 135*F with no thought to saving
them. So, these second generation seeds have
produced the third generation. Will be fun to see if
they have yellow pods.

These hooked up last night, 70% germination so far
on these old, dried out seeds. Viva Rockwool!

I am calling these Trippaul Threat v.2.

Looking great, Bookers! Nice dark purple color.

Are you growing hydroponically?
