Trying to grow hot peppers in SW Florida

Hot peppers should grow like weeds here.  I've been trying to grow them in pots, but either I'm using the wrong soil (potting soil?) or they are getting too much or too little water or ????.  In any case, I've probably stumbled on the right place for help...and for help selecting which varieties to try.

What sorts of peppers interest you? A hot one that grows well in St. Augustine is the famous Datil Pepper.
