using coffee grinds

Saw a recent thread about using coffee grinds so I've got my wife saving hers for me. Question is, how to use them?
Mix in the soil?
Place on top of soil around plants and water in?
Mix with soil on my second wave of plants? (still a couple of weeks away)
 Columbian or special blends( couldn't resist!!!)   Thanks guys!!

Mix with the soil. Till it in really good so it can decompose. Even better, start a compost pile/bin and put all of your non-fat based food scraps in there along with leaves, grass clippings, etc..... coffee grounds, egg shells, veggie scraps make for great, fertile composted soil.

Last year I would take a filter of it after a brew and just throw it out on the ground around my peppers. I don't know that it made any noticeable difference but the peppers in that area grew nicely.

I save coffee grounds year round for this purpose.  They get dumped into a 5 gallon bucket and stirred each time so they dry out enough to not mold, then right before plants are transplanted I mix it into the soil along with other various things.

Putting it on top of the soil isn't ideal because you want it to stay moist and decompose over time while you want the top of the soil to dry out to discourage mold and insect infestation.

Go ahead and mix it into your soil now, there's no particular reason to wait until transplant time.  I just don't feel rushed because my soil already has past seasons of grounds mixed in.

I usually put them under my Avocado trees. If I don't mix them in my dogs will eat them. Then they run around high as a kite on caffeine.

I have not used them on peppers yet. Just citrus fruit and such.

I would totally agree with everybody about either tilling in or composting. From my experience, just clumped on the surface and if you manage to actually keep it moist, you end up with lovely patches of mold growing around the feet of your plant.
