WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

Thanks Stefan, did you freeze any of yours? In the past I’ve never done that as I’ve always kept it fresh but I decided to freeze a test batch to see how it taste down the road with and without further processing. Hat’s off to you for doing the same, they look great! Hope you and the family hab a great day!

I haven't, Ramon but there's a good amount of vinegar added so I don't think that would have a positive effect on it. Foods look good! Did any of the Fatalii White germinated for you?

Well let me know at least, always interested in experiments :) I don't even have space left in the freezer, I had to throw away some of my last harvest   I'm still processing the remaining pods but the end is near  got about 32 lbs of ripe Jalapeno's in the freezer waiting to be smoked and dried  :onfire: Gonna start next week.

That steak plate looks fantastic!

I'm glad things have slowed down here some so I can finally catch up on cooking some of the recipes I've read here.

Have a great week!

Stefan I’m always trying out something crazy and I hope this one works … good point on freezer space, I’m all out too but what I did to save space was to freeze it flat in a jumbo freezer ziplock, so it's only 1/2" thick. Sad to read you had to toss some of your last harvest, hard to believe no one nearby could help you out :/

Wow dem 32lbs of smoked Jals sound yummy mon, good luck with the rest of your processing and hab a great day!

I still gave away most of them, didn't have to throw away that much when you saw how much I harvested  Gonna be nice once all those pods are smoked, arranged 4 smokers so I can do a big batch at once :D

Ramon I hope all is well with you and your family. It's a busy time of the year for all...and me included. I just occasionally pop in to the glogs . I'm between seasons (growing) right now and in hibernation mode until the startup to the grow after the Holidays. Looking forward to starting up some leaf lettuce and herbs under the lights...peppers will come about Feb.
Its always a pleasure stopping here to check out the food shots........now I have an appetite for a good lunch.....something good and spicy to fight off the cold temperature. Heading out to the hockey game tonight, looking forward to that and the weekend.....can't get here, soon enough !
Have a great weekend  !

I hope you and your family the best for the up coming Holiday season

Great to read, I hate being put in that position and I too had to toss a few pods this year but that was minimal. Can’t wait to see a picture of the 4 smokers, now that sounds really cool \o/ Hab a great weekend ^_^

Greg
Ting’s are fine with family, been working so much that I’ve cut back my online time drastically and very little time for da crop which truly saddens me :/ It looks like I’ll be traveling a lot in 2014 during the first quarter, might not have a glog or if I do it’s be a “Not Glog” for a few pics if all doesn’t die off, lol.

Back at ya on foodies, you are da master ^_^

Hope your team won, I’m assuming you are a Blackhawks fan?

Hope you and that family have an awesome holiday as well.

Well I hope you don't work to hard Ramon.

It's been my pleasure to come here and read about your adventures and recipes all season.

Your generosity and willingness to help hasn't gone unnoticed, you made a lot of friends this year.

I for one hope you have a glog next season, those car washed perfect peppers need to be on display!

You da mon!

Just swung by for a visit, Brother - your foodie pics
really got my stomach grumbling!

The MoA pods look great - nice pix of those babies!

Hope your possbile travel plans for 2014 don't make you
a complete stranger, buddy!  You need a little pepper
love, too, along with work!

Ramon, firstly I hope your travel plans include South Africa, I could always do with more help come harvest time :D

This glog has been totally amazing and informative and educational and inspirational and appetite inducing and keyboard destroying and just amazingly amazing.

So if you don't do a glog next season I am coming traveling to you and going to picket outside your house with my sticky keyboard and drool running down my face until you start your glog again. We South Africans are great at protesting. We get it from our miners in their gumboots. And I will do the traditional zulu gumboot dance for you. Seriously - if you value your neighbours and every one who knows you, you will want to keep that carzy South African off your stoop (porch)!

But for now you can have a wee rest - well done!

:D

Paul thanks for foodie and pic kudos, back at ya brethren. It would be impossible to become a stranger with such great members like you, Scott, Greg, Shane, Jamie, John, Lournes, Stefan, Rick, Pia, Penny, la Muchacha (Annie un beso),  and all the other memebers that commented, shared their ideas here. My apologies if I didn’t mention someone’s name, I’d have to go back thru the whole glog -_- lol

lol Lourens I always appreciate your kind words and back at ya for your glog, I’m looking forward to following it over 2014. Boy would I love to make it by South Africa, it would be a pleasure to help you around da chili farm and I’ve always wanted to surf Jeffreys Bay ^_^
BTW if you show up and do the traditional Zulu gumboot dance in their colorful outfit I would be forced to oblige your efforts :D

Now with your keyboard in mind here’s last night’s dinner ….

Last night we had grilled pork loin chops, try to guess which two I ate, lol.

+1 on that! I'll be right there next to him on the picket line... a bedbug crazy Irishman tending the fire in the oil drum out front of your place. If you're gonna picket, you hafta have people standing around the oil drum fire warming their hands. ;)

I hear ya about not having much free time about now brother... cold and flu season has started here and I'm finding myself doing a lot of fill-ins at work as well as getting ready for the holidays. I hope you and your family have a great holiday season, and we see ya around the campus when you can make it... we'd miss your friendly presence and incredible pics...  Cheers!
