news Warthog

Anyone who got some have any luck with germination yet? A bunch of the GJP popped and I have some nice seedlings! Still waiting to see signs of the Warthog tho OH PLEASE! OH PLEASE! sprout!

They must have heard me talking... I have one up, and another hook coming up. Slow germinators.

Any tips for further guaranteeing the cotylodons can push the seed off?

My approach is to take nail clippers and *very carefully* clip just the seam around the edge of the seed to free it. Make sure you have good lighting so you can see what you are doing. Also, using a jeweler's loupe or some other means of magnification helps a lot. I also put a drop of water on the seed coat before I begin to help soften it up a little.

I'm keeping the seedling in a small, very moist domed container with breathe-holes.

Using a humidity dome to start seeds is fine, but I would take it off once the seeds start sprouting to avoid damping off.

The seed coat's not clamped, it's somewhat plump with moisture, and you can see the green of the cotyledons already, so this isn't a bad helmet head - thought it's not one I'd do the pinch-and-pull method on quite yet either. I might be different than BF in that in a case like this I'll leave it domed for 24 hours or so then, then if I see more green showing under the coat, I'll try slipping it off without surgery. The green below the seed coat suggests the growth node of the seedling is already outside the seed coat, so as long as you protect against a lower break the sprout should survive. The more cotyledon you can save though, the better start the sprout will have. They can stall quite a bit if you break them off low down against the node. Also, if I leave a seedling domed for any meaningful amount of time I'm careful to let it adjust properly before it goes back under lighting of any intensity.

Thank you for your suggestions! I've had seedlings have a tough start like this but I really want to get this one going!
Maybe it's true what they say the hotter the pepper the harder the germination.

I had sent an envelope as well a few months ago. Mine just showed up. Looks like he was indeed out of the Warthog seeds because he sent be Purple Wartryx instead. I think its pretty awesome that he still is trying to come through despite being out of seeds. Im sure he had to have gotten pretty overwhelmed with all the requests he was getting. I'm pretty stoked on these seeds and look forward to germinating them soon.
