WASABI

I've tried my hand at growing wasabi, was a bit challenging in our Australian summer and the pay-off, although delicious, was pretty small.

Would be good in a flood and drain system I think.

that was my guess... fun project for personal usage but long haul and big project for anything profit wise...

would you consider this a viable crop for profiting? or too involved? morefor fun?
It is a very viable cash crop in regional areas like Oregon, because of the climate. In areas of high heat, not so much. The only sunlight mine gets are indirect from a north facing sliding glass door so you could conclude they prefer diffused light.

My grow container is a 2 1/2 gal bucket with a hydro insert filled with clay balls. Water is about an inch above the base of the basket so water is wicked up the the root system. Roots can now be seen exiting the basket in search of water.

This is what I started off with.

This is where we are at now with the rhizome producing offshoots.

And as promised earlier the containment system.

I started mine around the beginning of the year if that is any indication. Generally though, wasabi is a slow growing plant and very specific enviromental conditons must be employed when growing as a cash crop. I am doing it because I love wasabi with my sushi and it is very expensive at the market and it is supposed to be very difficult to grow and I embraced the challenge.
