pests WHAT BUG IS THIS?

i am curious as to what kind of bug this is. is it beneficial or not? thanks in advance.

Looks like some sort of stink bug. Some are beneficial and others are not.
Any entomologists on the forum?

Then you may be killing some really beneficial bugs. Lacewings? Beatles? Assassin Bugs?

Assassin Bugs will eat anything they can catch. Saw one suck a stink bug dry, and Iowa must be the only state in the midwest without those insects.

Iowa city is is like 2 hrs away but im sure we do but ive never seen those before. I check my plants everyday also. Hopefully next year!

Would that eat tomato hornworms?

About the same size and eats milkweed which makes it toxic so I'd say yes.

I had 1 assassin bug in my garden this year. I guess he got bored and left since he can't eat aphids or whiteflies I'm assuming.

Maybe when you saw him he was to large for the little things.
