flavor What would be your Greatest Hits of pepper flavors?

So I'm not new to hot peppers or growing them but over the last 15ish years I've only been able to grow the most common peppers that I've found locally, like Jalapenos, Orange Habaneros, Reapers, Scotch Bonnets and Fataliis. What I plan on doing is growing a variety of different peppers next year to get an overview of flavors. My question is what would you recommend planting to create like a flight or greatest hits, regardless of heat levels?

I basically have unlimited space but I would like to try and keep it focused to maybe 20 plants or less. Or more if that's just the way it is. Then once I have my bearings I can focus more on the ones I like or can try to cross them to make something. Many thanks in advance!

Be careful who you buy seeds from on Ebay or Amazon. There are a bunch of reputable seed suppliers listed in this thread: https://thehotpepper.com/threads/seed-suppliers.77439/#post-1781622
Nice. I'm not surprised about ebay, it was definitely my last resort. Thankfully I was able to get all of them from Whitehotpeppers, Superhotchiles aka Refining Fire Chiles and Puckerbutt, except for one. The Tasmanian Black I had to get from Amazon sold by Sherwood Seeds. I think Sherwood is good, I didn't see them on the list but they do have their own site that looks legit with a ton of varities and other types of plants. I'll update the thread there if the Tasmanian turns out well.

Cross-pollination might be interesting, I plan on planting seeds next year from each plant I grow this year and it'll be interesting to see what comes of it. I'm not going to prevent crosses at all. Might get something cool, never know.

Okay so here is the semi-final list:
Atomic Starfish
Chocolate Primotalii
Scotch Bonnet
Tasmanian Black
7 Pot Nebru
Bhut Jolokia (maybe peach?)
Yellow Scotch Brain
Brown jalapeño
bahamian goat
Datil

I still feel like I'm missing something, maybe something green? The hard part is going to be finding all of these, hopefully someone has them all in place but I'm seeing a lot that are out of stock. Might be an Ebay adventure. Anyways thanks again for all the help, I'll definitely update this post on how they're coming along and turn out.

I'd add a slender chili of some kind. Big Thai, Thai Dragon, etc., just personal preference. Chili flakes are always good to have on hand.

Accidental cross pollination is always an adventure. Our bees crossed my Wild Colombians with Trinidad Scorpions and made for a crazy new variety. Share pictures of any new peppers you get!

As for eBay peppers, I've bought a few off eBay and had good luck. I've been about 50/50 from Amazon.

I grew 5 Pequins season before last & one had both up facing & down hanging on one plant.
Last season I grew 2 & one we called Hangy downy pepper & this is it.

Two Mystery peppers in 2 seasons, maybe it's time for a new gene pool LOL.

Look at those fat juicy pods & they taste just like Pequins.

Now that's a Pequin, she had a ton of Pods.

Hope your germ rates are better than mine from Puckerbutt. I think my seeds got nuked in a hot car sitting in SC somewhere, they "disappeared" for awhile off of USPS tracking right after they were accepted before they left that region. I got a fat goose egg from that cycle.

They were not my first choice if I'm being honest 😂
Hopefully they bear out, the ones I'm really excited about are the Chocolate Primotalii, KSLS, Brown Jalapeno and Yellow Scotch Brain. I'm really wanting to try a smoky flavored pepper and I'm hoping the Brain is going to be like a much hotter scotch bonnet. Actually now that I think about it I might plant some Fatalii's and purposely cross them with a scotch bonnet and see what that produces. I'm sure its been done but I don't know if anything like that has ever been stabilized. Its going to be a good year!

I am surprised with all the comments for bhut jolokia. Maybe the first time I grew them I had some odd seeds cause I hated the flavor. Just seemed like a burnt nothing. On superhot front I will grow Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion Moruga, Apocalypse Scorpion, Butch "T" Scorpion and usually one or two new each year (this year White Moruga Scorpion) for mix of heat/flavors. Did I miss the Bhut Jolokia bandwagon when that took off? Am I missing something? :)

For me, bhut jolokia has a really nice smell and so-so flavor. I like growing them to spice things up, but straight ghost pepper hot sauce is mid tier taste for me. Maybe that's why everyone likes growing them, for the aroma? I say this with 5 ghost peppers growing at the moment...

Okay so an update:
1. Germination has been difficult. I'd say about 75% success rate with a variety of methods, soils and setups. Even pulled the 'ol wet paper towel method out of the bag so you know it was getting desperate. Some like the Foodarama Scotch Bonnet absolutely will not germ, out of 20+ seeds not one success. I have potential crosses of Scotch Bonnets that were frozen for more than 3 years that DID germ. I was very patient as well, I gave them lots of time. Another total failure was the 7-pot Nebru from Puckerbutt, go figure.

Its odd, I've been growing peppers from seed for years and I never had this high of a failure rate. Dunning-Kruger effect I expect, I didn't look too far into germinating rare varieties because I thought I had a good system so it could all be my fault. There's probably a lesson to learn there.

2. The Tasmanian Black Pepper seeds from Sherwood's seeds did awesome, I can vet this seller. Great stuff, definitely recommend.

3. Something in my garage ate two seedlings, a Tasmanian Black and Maldivian Heart Orange. The entire plant was gone so I need to look into that because its been wayyyy too wet and sometimes cold to leave them outside all the time at this stage.

4. Ordered a bunch of plants when the germinating wasn't going well and if they arrive in good shape I'll vet that seller as well. Couldn't find much on them but they had some good varieties so I took a risk and we'll see how that works out. Also bought 2 more bhut jolokias from Walmart and they're doing great.

All said, if I don't lose any more plants, the ones I ordered arrive safely and the 16 additional seedlings I have going come up, should have about 60ish plants.

Type “best tasting” in the search bar (top right corner); you should find a lot of answers because this question is very popular ;)

Mid/ late season update w/ pictures:

Okay big update coming, I said I would provide full details and here they are:

So everything has gone very well. I have 47 pepper plants that survived to this point.

The plants I ordered from point #4 in my last post, which were delayed again and again did arrive after I contested the order with Paypal. The seller was Matt's Patch. He did cancel the order as I asked but sent the plants anyways, they arrived fairly safely and while I would vet the seller, just be sure you order from them as early as possible. Mine came mid-July and I lost a few weeks or a month of productivity because of that, even though I ordered them in early April iirc.

As you'll see I grew them all in disposable pots from Costco with above ground potting soil. I used a 1/4" layer of vermiculite at the bottom of the pots and drilled 10 small holes in each. I have Bermuda grass and it was necessary to do it that way. This system worked very well but left the plants vulnerable to wind and storms knocking them over and you'll see where I staked the absolute hell out of them and weighted them down. Last year a storm broke a full half of my Armageddon plant off and I lost so much time because of it, this might be overkill but I wasn't taking any chances. Most are just staked to the first Y branch but some with heavier peppers were tied with a slack string to support the weight only if the wind hits them. As far as watering, I water them thoroughly every day and fertilize every 3rd to 5th day, more recently as its crunch time.

When I do get pods, and I've gotten a ton of fataliis and Ghosts, I dry them in a $50 air fryer/ dehydrator I bought just for this and then grind them into powder with a grinder and mortar and pestle I also bought just for this.

Finally, a few issues:
Space: I'm running out of space and when I initially moved them outside I had many on a table which forced them to grow tall to compete for light. This was a mistake.
Time and money: Yeah this was not the cheapest or most efficient way to try a variety of rare peppers
Time crunch/ future plans: It's late August and so far only the Fataliis, Ghosts, Black Jalapenos and Tasmanian Black Peppers have produced any pods and even then the Tas Black pods haven't matured at all. These things are in no rush to produce and with fall coming I am considering whether or not to drop $2k on a greenhouse to keep this not-so-little experiment going. Not sure what I'll do as of now.

Pics:
Note the one with all the pots lined up was about 6 to 8 weeks ago. They are 5 times bigger than that now, I just wanted to show the madness of nearly 50 peppers in one pic. I also just wanted to show the stinger on that Ghost, I thought it looked cool. Then there's two Yellow Scotch Brains that the leaves are all dark and rolled up on, pretty sure I over-fertilized those, not really concerned because I think I have 7 or 8 more YSBs that are doing fine but if you know what causes that please let me know. Then I think the last one shows how my little string system works when the wind is hitting a plant.

If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know. I honestly just kind of made this all up as I went along with the little experience I had previously and I have to say all in all it worked out pretty well. Would I do it again? Maybe? It took a lot of time, money and effort but when they all start producing I think it will be worth it.

Eh, edit: the pic with all the plants in one shot was from June 20th. I'm proud of how much they've grown since then. I also didn't mention, I forgot about 3 Tasmanian Black Pepper plants for about 2 months, they were hidden behind some garbage cans yet still grew and produced peppers but were about half the size of the one I did not forget about, validating the work and effort I put into this. Here's a picture of all 4 of them together so you can see what routine watering and fertilization does for these peppers:
