I just cut the roots so they will fit in a smaller container(usually around 3 gallon) with some room for the roots to grow and I usually use a light soil-less mix like pro-mix. Your spare room should be fine but I'm still experimenting with the amount of light and temps. Too much light/heat and you'll have to trim back often.
