To top or not to top, that is the question...
Do it the Greek way. Take a sturdy pole, drive it into the soil, near the main stem, use twine to attach the plant to the pole and let them work together.
Especially useful when there is not much profit from topping but you don't want to end up with a wind-topped plant.
Personally, if I have the space, I will top one plant and let one of the same cultivar untopped. But since I am growing about 40 cultivars I might do it the Greek way (that would be a lot of poles though...).
