Why Only "Hot Peppers?"....Shall we discuss "OTHER" peppers too?

By the way, you realize this is a hot pepper forum, right? Kinda like going to a muscle car forum and asking what the big deal is about muscle cars.

I know! They laughed me out of the meeting when I asked to talk about my chevy sprint. Bastards!

Seriously though, if this forum was all about heat and no flavor everyone would be using an extract of some sort rather than the actual peppers.

potawie,

yes, there are about 50 varieties having different attributes and innumerable " crossbreeds".
The link you posted has many cross breeds.

I love this forum and I do not like hot peppers - period. I grow some for friends, and make sauce or powder for them. But this forum is about far more than hot peppers - growing techniques, lighting, containers, soil mixes, raising seedlings, other plants, garden structures, raised beds, greenhouses, not to mention the Lounge and Political sections! Yeah, the primary focus may be hot peppers but who cares!

Just my 2¢ worth.

I'm glad to hear that! But I really never knew that you didn't like hot peppers.

HERETIC!!!..........j/k. This forum has just about something for everyone and is a wealth of information on all things growing.

I do grow some milder varieties and some bells as well, but they just aren't as interesting to talk about. And I have as many tomato plants and varieties as I do peppers if not more. Plus, I grow onions, shallots, garlic, several culinary herbs, green beans, peas, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, sweet corn, strawberries, ground cherries, and going to be trying naranjilla this year as well. No need to limit yourself to just Super Hots!

THP,

Are you kidding? A newborn baby's behind is less sensitive to the heat from peppers than my mouth and lips. :onfire: Now, I do love Hungarian Hot Wax peppers - they are a must grow. I also make sure I have plenty of cayennes and jalapenos to add to dishes, though I do so in very moderate amounts.

I made several different sauces to send to a buddy in England - he about choked on the Bhut Jolokia sauce - but I did warn him it was hot. Ditto for relatives. And last summer, I had several people get Bhuts, Habs and other peppers from my garden.

I learn so much from this site. Thanks to a passing remark by AJ about his container peppers growing roots into his yard, I now bury my pots, as much as to protect them from them from the beating sun as anything. Pam, through AJ, told me about bottom watering for seedlings, which really eliminated lots of problems as well as cut 2-3 weeks off growing time. Discussions about lights led me to research stuff which in turn has made growing indoors much more productive. AJ's threads about growing in containers caused me to move to 7-gallon pots instead of 5-gallon ones - and it has made a huge difference in my tomatoes. Not to mention all the people who have sent me not only pepper and other veggie seeds, but even horseradish roots (thanks, Jackie!).

No doubt, I and many others could go on and on. But to me, if this site was limited to nothing but discussing hot peppers and heat, I would probably have about two dozen posts!

I don't understand your argument NJA.
For the short time I've been living here in THP land I've seen nothing but openess and friendly ppl's discussing everything from Tequila to the best PH meter.
There has not been any lableing of people as weak who say they don't like their chillies super hot. THP is probably the most humble and open forum on the internet.

Most people like a balance of flavours here. Some people see heat as an equal part of the flavour. Everones tastes and tolerances are different. What's hot for you may be lacking something to another taster and then it's out of balance yeah?
Most of the threads I've seen where the food was super hot, the taster has mentioned that they couldn't taste much else. But they never mentioned they liked it that way.

In the end, it's each to their own, and this is the best place to be yourself and let others enjoy that same freedom.

Peace and Peppers :)

I notice what you notice DTS. People here are food lovers and love to cook. The macho heat eaters and pranks are on YouTube, not here. Respect the pepper. :)

I ate a habanero today. Its the hottest pepper I have ever stuck in my mouth. It was hot. I know that it wasnt even close to being anywhere near the super hots. I am going to work my way up till I eat a Bhut Jolokia. I am having fun making a sauce right now.

I am a lover of the bell pepper. Oh My Gosh those are so good. There is a section here on this forum to talk about growing other stuff than hot peppers.

Ahhhhhhh.I hear people coming outa their cocoons and speaking their minds.
People are here not only for Hot Peppers but they are here for everything about Peppers . (ansd also other veggies)

It would be interesting to make four catagories of peppers and exchange ideas, recipes etc about them.
We can have,
1) Bells
2) Mild varieties like Jalpenos to Habs
3) Hots like Thai, Piri Piri and likes
4) Super Hots like Trinidad scorpions, Nagas, Bhuts etc

What you say guys?

NJA

I don't think categorizing peppers would work. It's like setting up a class division. Us on this side the others over there somewhere.
"Hey mild guy, this is the superhot section, you're in the wrong place buddy" Not gonna work is it?

I like the setup of the forum. Believe it or not it takes years to figure out what works smoothly.

DTS,

I agree. Besides, who is going to decide what pepper is superhot, hot, sort of hot, not quite so hot, barely hot and has no heat at all!

Seriously, I don't see any need to try and reinvent the wheel.

I don't see that
The varieties with a number instead of a name aren't "crossbreeds" but are part of different government seed collections for saving and research. Some of their varieties are extremely rare

http://thechileman.org/guide_research.php
"The USDA based in Georgia, USA operate a National Plant Seed System which researches and houses one of the most extensive Capsicum seed collections in the world. This collection contains over 2000 Capsicum accessions that include cultivars from all over the world.

Observation data is recorded upon arrival of the seed at the facility and a USDA Plant Introduction number (PI ######) is then assigned. Observation data is extensive and includes everything from the size and shape of the plant and pods, to the calyx shape and fruit set. The information and any subsequent evaluation data are entered into the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN). "

Well, I believe that pepper are peppers and they all have a place on my plate.I also agree with what others have mentioned, I like the layout the way it is and it seems to work as it is. If you like a sweet Bell Pepper as your favorite or a Jolokia as your favorite, we are all equals here in our love of pepper and everything about peppers.
