Will pay for some hot pepper pollen for experiment

I'm looking to buy some super-hot pepper pollen, to try to create a hybrid off my cayenne.

I like the pepper production and size of the plant, so I'm testing my grounds for pepper breeding

I'm looking for bhut/7pod/brainstrain/trinidad scorpion (anything in the superhot category)

From what I have read, as long as it doesn't get to incredibly hot it should travel fine on the end of a q-tip, in a plastic seedbag. Or a open blossom from one of these peppers would be better, so it stays on the plant until used.

I know there's a chance it wont work, but I'm willing to take the chance so I can try to create something new.

tell me what you want for your trouble, if its fair ill shot you over paypal $ thanks.

I am interested and will send you a couple different types, but first I have to see if I can actually collect a fair amount of pollen. I will get back to you.

nice... thanks

tell me what you come up with. I figured this was a strong plant with tons of flowers popping out, so it was primetime to experiment
and get them to seed so I can get them going under the lights and germination chamber, plus the production time from seed to pepper was shorter.

I'm trying to find a good scientific study on creating hybrids and what I should actually be doing for testing step by step.

I might be treading on fresh ground, but I want to see what I can make from this.

According to: FLOWERING PLANT EMBRYOLOGY: WITH EMPHASIS ON ECONOMIC SPECIES, by Nels Lersten, tri-celled pollen is viable for 12hrs to 2 days, while bi-celled pollen is viable for 2+ days... What type of pollen Capsicums have I don't know.

He states that viability can be extended by "quick freezing" and cold storage for a few months for tri-celled pollen and up to 2 yrs for bi-celled pollen.

do you have that book? I was looking online but its about $130+ bucks.

I found a reference to it on google books...

still have not found the type of pollen in peppers though.

My thought though... if flowers are cut off the plant, the pollen might stay viable longer until leaving the flower? unless pollen is
only good on the plant for that short time?

No I read the section on Google Books. I thought the copy I was looking at was $99. Still too much for me though.

I think your best bet is to see about quick or flash freezing, but be carefull not to freeze dry the pollen. THen ship to the recipient with a cold pack mailer.

guess my best options are growing out a few of my own plants... I have about 40 seedlings right now of mixed types of superhots.

that I was planning on putting 5-6 strong plants of different types under lights and grow over the winter. I think they will stay alive if I can give them enough light. Then once next spring/early summer hits I can continue my pollination attempts.

I'm still up for someone sprinkling some pollen (or better, throw a few flowers with pollen in them) in a baggie and have me try some on my cayenne.

which might give me the chance to get those hybrid seed ready to put into my germination station and see if they are viable and give me a starting point.

thanks for all the info guys.

I still never found out if its bi or tri pollen.

millworkman any word on checking pollen?

or anyone else show an interest. Anything created from it will be shared so I can make a stable mix.

it's been way too hot for my supers outside, but I have a brain strain 7pod inside with flowers getting ready to open that I will try and collect for ya JJ.

ok thanks a bunch.... just message me if you do, I still have not found a lot of info on viability of pollen over time but I'm sure its got to have a usable lifespan
