Window Silly Chili 18

Hello fellow growers!

First glog!

I’ve been growing chilies every year for about 15 years. Due to the “charming” danish climate, and lack of garden and greenhouse, I’ve turned into a passionated windowsill-grower. I like to keep things fairly simple. No fancy light, relying only on the light that nature has to offer, some chili fertilizer and a lot of love.
This year, for the first time, I’m trying out coco coir. My small plants currently sit in 100% coco coir, because I wanted to get a better feel for the medium’s behaviour. Currently, because the danish spring offers temperatures around 5 degrees, the coco coir develop a slightly moldy surface, from sitting on the cold windowsill. This hopefully will be bygone when the sun starts to get more power. The windowssill is facing south, and can get really hot during summer. Therefore I will later on, when repotting, add 1/3 pumice, to get even better water retention and aeration.

This it what I am growing this year:

C. anuum
  • Czechoslovakian Black

C. baccatum
  • Aji Little Finger Orange
  • Pimenta Barra do Ribeiro

C. chinense
  • Cumari
  • Tobago Seasoning
  • White Bullet
  • Peachgum TigerMAMP

See below. This small plug tells an amazing story. The poor seedling was suffering from helmet head, and in my attempt to remove it, the seedling broke in half. Feeling frustrated from my failed attempt to save the seedling, I left the broken-off half lying on top of the plug.
A week later, I checked the plug, and the broken-off half rooted!!
This is by far the youngest clone I’ve ever made. Amazing! I will update with its progress, to see how/if it might have affected it’s growth.
So if you break a precious seedling, don’t despair - try to clone it!

Thanks for looking! I will try to update this glog as often as I can.
Happy growing out there

Time flies and again it is time for an update

Everything is growing well in my window sill garden! Especially the Aji is taking off like crazy. It really never lets me down.
The Peachgum TigerMAMP is still looking really pale, and I think it might be a special albino type All other plants looks nice and green. Speaking of Peachgum TigerMAMP. The small sprout which rooted after I accidentally broke it, is finally starting to grow leaves - it's alive!

Sorry for the less than optimal photo quality - I will do better in the next update. Promise!

Lastly, PLEASE someone help me with these rotated images. Can I add some sort of coding to rotate them in my post?
It seems the only way I can get the images to show correctly is to take the photo in landscape, with my phone.
But that format doesn't really make sense, when taking photos of tall plants...

Welcome! Very nice-looking plants. Especially for a windowsill grow without extra lighting, good job. When did you start the seeds?

About the pictures: do you have auto-rotate enabled on your phone? Without it, the camera app starts in landscape mode by default and stays in that mode even when taking portrait pictures. If you have auto-rotate on, the camera app should rotate into the right position and the problem should be solved.

Edited to add: This problem arises because your pictures will probably show up in the right position in the phone gallery, so you wouldn't know there's a problem. That's because your phone detects the position of your phone with an accelerometer (or sometimes a gyroscope), and rotates the picture accordingly. But it just does that in your phone gallery, it doesn't actually edit the file.

Edit #2: Hooray, my 500th post!

Congrats on the 500 posts!

Thanks a lot Plants were started during the last half of January.

I like your theory, but on iPhone I don't have any setting for auto-rotate. As you say, the photos show up correctly in my gallery, on both phone and Mac. Furthermore, when attaching photos to emails (or even uploading on other communities) photos always show up with the correct orientation. Thehotpepper is the only place where I have issues :(

EDIT: Quick googling shows that it's apparently a known issue on IP.Boards. Note to self; LANDSCAPE PHOTOS on next update.

Your chilis looks really good, by the way do you check the ph of the final fertilizer mixture using the B'cuzz A+B?

Thanks a lot

Nope, I'm not checking the ph, as I don't have any (fancy) equipment for doing so.

Those are some nice looking plants, how long have they been growing?

Also, on the pic issue - on a lot of forums you have to hold your phone horizontal when you take the pic for it to post correctly.

edit: I see that that is what landscape mode is. I don't take pics with a phone, so I'm behind times on the terms.  :surprised:

Thanks! The Aji and Tobago was started in late January, the rest was started mid/late February

I just took a photo during repotting today, holding the phone horizontally - we will see how that turns out Edit: VICTORY!

Long overdue update. Things are looking good. I'm down to "only" six plants - the rest were given to friends and relatives.
It's funny to observe how the different plants show so big difference in growth rate and pattern - you can easily tell the difference. So far all plants, except the weed-like Aji have been given the chance to grow without me interfering by trimming or removing any leaves.

All plants are now in their final pots. The soil consist only of 4 parts coco coir (from IKEA) and 1 part pumice (also IKEA).
Fertiliser used is Atami B'cuzz COCO A+B, 1,5+1,5 ml/liter.

So far only the Czechoslovakian Black is pushing out chilies. So far I count at least five.
The Aji is flowering, but so far dropping them again. Same goes for Tobago Seasoning and Cumari.
This happens to me (the plants) every year, so I'm not panicking yet

Tobago Seasoning (3 liter) - Aji Little Finger Orange (6,5 liter) - Cumari (1,5 liter)

White Bullet (1 liter) - Czechoslovakian Black (3 liter) - Peachgum TigerMAMP (1,5 liter)

They are doing fine - but still all flowers drop on Aji, Tobago, Bullet and Cumari. So far only chilies on the Czechoslovakian and a couple on the TigerMAMP, which also doesn't seem to suffer (as much) from the flower drop.

Will post some photos when time permits

Do the flowers produce any pollen?

tuellarsen said:
Yup they do. And I make sure to give the plants a good shake every day

Then something else makes the pollen not viable, perhaps too low air moisture could be one of the reasons the plants are not making any pods.

That might be it. We currently have the hottest pre-summer in forever here in Denmark. No rain, just plenty of sun from a blue sky - all of which is quite the opposite of what the danish weather normally has in store

Looking at the humidity it is actually (outside) around 30-40%. Ive never really paid much attention to it during summer, to be honest. Would a morning spray of the plants help?
