chinense Yellow Scotch Bonnets

There are so many varieties of this gorgeous pepper: Jamaica, MOA, Papa Dreadie, TFM (Trenton Farmer Market), Papa Joe's, Foodarama, Burkina Yellow and list goes on...
Which ones have you tried?
Have you guys got a favourite one?

Pics are welcome! :)

Cheers

I ordered a labeled sampler box from PeppersByMail and there were two Chocolate Scotch Bonnets in there. That's the only one I've had, but I ate both of them the same morning. It may be the most delicious pepper I've ever had.

West Coast Seeds has a good strain that grows very aggressively to take advantage of the cooler climate here in the Valley. I have two plants I'm growing out this year for a contest.

So far the MOA, the papa dreadie ive gro So far werent the best producers, I got a few new varieties this year to try. Hoping nebru7 is a winner

A list of all the scotch bonnet natural variants and types and then also a list of the well liked crosses that've been made.

I wanna try some type of scotch bonnet crossed with the Bahamian Goat or vice versa.

Look up Lemon Starrburst By Khang Starr. It's a BG x MOA SB and I think it's F4 right now. Absolutely beautiful pods.

I've tried and grown a bunch and I love the TFM.  For hybrids I like the Scotch Brain and my TFM x Yellow BBG cross.

Sofar ive only had MOA yellow pods ive grown myself. Flavor was great but because i lost a ton of blooms to heat my production was rather poor. Growing MOA red from MWCH and Dreadies this year but im prepared with some shade cloth this time. TFM sounds like a good one to try also.

I really want the Lemon Starrburst. It sounds incredible, but he said he doesn't release seeds or give out/sell plants. =\

'For Scotch Bonnet type, I am going with yellow but I am boring.  I like the all, especially paired with something sweet.  But yellow seems to stand out.  Maybe it is a visual thing.

I thought he sold/traded them in his Google Plus group? Maybe that's just his normal seeds.

I grew a bunch of varieties last season. TFM, Foodarama/Beth Boyd, PDreadie, generic ones labeled "Jamaican Yellow," Schneider Farm, SB "Long," Papa Joe's. (I also grew Safi Reds... Great pepper, but i cannot bring myself to consider them to be Scotch Bonnets.)

The good news is, all of them were really good. The Long ones threw me off due to the shape, but the flavor was there. The same can be said of the Schneiders... They were a little elongated/droopy, but they tasted right. One standout favorite was the Foodarama; big, impressive, crazy-looking pods with thick, meaty walls... These could be useful if you're trying to smoke the pods or you need then to hold up on a stew or something.

My overall favorite was the TFM, possibly because i had eaten more of those than any other prior to growing my own, so they kinda defined my concept of what a Bonnet should be. But they are also awesome plants-- strong, hardy, productive, pretty. The pods were all very true to phenotype, and the flavor is at least as Bonnetacious as any other SB I've tried. Way more Bonnetacious than most others...

I wanted to love the Dreadies, as they have a great backstory and Erin's contributions to this site, the pepper hobby, and this planet in general are inspiring. But, TBH, i had trouble germinating the seeds and the plants that grew last year struggled for me. The pods i did get were incredible. Looked great, tasted great. But, at this point, I've kinda concluded that the Dreadies just ain't up to the challenge of growing under my ham-fisted, ineffective gardening practices. Others have had better luck with them, obviously, but i kinda suck as a grower and the other varieties have thrived for me. (Tried growing Dreadies again this year but germination problems persist. Maybe I'll need new seed stock??)

I had MOAs in mixed boxes and they're good enough but honestly, they have too much annuum character for my liking. The Bonnet flavor is present, but it ain't front and center, where is need it. I have also noticed that a lot of folks on this site and FB are growing MOAs that lack the classic Bonnet shape. I've always said that flavor is the most important aspect, but the shape is part of the magic that creates the SB mystique.

Despite all that, i decided to grow some MOAs this year, just to give them a fair shake. I just put 33 yellow Bonnet plants in the ground yesterday, including Foodarama, the mysterious Walton Farm, some MOAs, and no less than 21 TFMs. (I'm also growing some red Safis and orange-ish Freeports, but i think real SBs ought to be Yella...) I guess, for now, I've picked a favorite in the TFM, but I'm keeping an open mind and I'm always willing to try new varieties, or give familiar strains another go...

Sorry to write so much about this, but i am obviously a little obsessed with Yella Scotch Bonnets, so this thread pushed my buttons pretty good...

PS- i want to thank THP members Trident Chilli and Fauxton for hooking me up with seeds that i might otherwise never have gotten ahold of. Y'all are the best!!

Here is the box of Dreadies that Gary sent me a couple years ago.

I grew them out but ended up raising a Red Cross of some sort. But I did send seeds to TGCM, he grew out picture perfect pods and sent seed back to me this year. My fingers are crossed! The leaves are the size of my hand.

Khang usually releases his crosses to some trusted growers once they're in mid development, there's several growers on PLC that will have Lemon Starrburst seeds available soon. The reason he says he doesn't give out is because everyone who watches the videos would want seeds and the plants aren't producing a lot. He was absolutely swamped with seed requests after he posted about the cross. This year he has a whole patch of F4 so hopefully there will be more seeds to go around soon.

Because he's just one guy with limited grow space this is how availability of most of his crosses go. It's not that he's trying to keep people from growing them, He cares about the genetics and wants to be sure that things are semi stable before they're fully released.

So F7 or F8 are when it's stable?
Maybe? Sometimes you get lucky and it stabilizes early, sometimes you have recessive genes that stubbornly stick around for generations.

F7-F8 are considered to be stable as long as you haven't seen any off phenotypes in the generations prior. The only way to know if you're on the right track is to plant a lot of plants and check for off phenotypes. Ideally you're looking for only one pheno to pop up.

Wulp, it's sounding like I need to try some TFM!  Thanks for the input, Bicycle808 and FreeportBum!  Really cool (and shiny!) cross there, FreeportBum!  I'm a Scotch lover and am trying Scotch brain, MOA, and Freeport Orange this year.

For flavor, I'd say the TFM is probably my favorite. Tried for the past 2 years, and I couldn't get the P. Dreadie to germinate, but I'm dying to try that strain. I still have a bunch of seeds for it (from a few different members here), so I'll give it a shot again next year. If anyone might have a SFRB of Dreadie pods they'd be willing to sell at the end of this season, please keep me in mind!

(They're not all Yellow, but) Here's a post of pics of the different Bonnets I grew in 2016:
