There's too many variables across both situations and requirements from different individuals. If you take into consideration time and money, ground has to win. What costs more, loads of seeds to throw in the ground or a bunch of hydro setups. The ground is certainly more forgiving if you can't pay the plants any attention for days on end. On an individual plant basis and given everything needed, you will probably get higher yield in hydro, although I imagine the taste of soil grown, more organic setups beats out artificial setups and chemicals.
