In the UK it's always spelled Chilli - I've seen it in books/websites from other countries as chili, so I guess it depends on the country 
Both "chili" and "chile" are acceptable and interchangeable. With the "e" is the correct spelling in Spanish. But chili is an evolved spelling equally acceptable in the U.S. (think Red Hot Chili Peppers).
In my opinion are the only two acceptable ways to spell chile/chili to describe peppers. And yeah, with the "i" here in the U.S. is usually used to describe the hot dog topper.

Everything in the UK is chilli with two l's. All sauces etc have it like that It's funny how many variations of the word there is!

Someone procures the chiles (chillis so you understand
) or powders , and send them out to whomever signs up, then the meal is specified.
Like, one time it was two McDonalds cheeseburgers and 10 oz. of Moruga powder (if memory serves), another time it was a 6" Subway sandwich with everything specified including mayo and mustard and fresh pods on it. It is a good way for everyone to be on the same level. All are video recorded and posted here. Pretty cool stuff to watch.

Ours is hosted in a local restaurant where we've jointly set up the competition
