DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Thank you!! :)
It's going to be a great year :)
The goats were relocated to a new bigger area with better shelter at night, so the old goat pen is goat free now, and safe from those jalapeno loving beasties...lo

I think the new plant/seedling/hook count is around 775 now :)
I'm hoping to hit over the 1,000 mark just for my own out of control fun :)

We have the best neighbors ever!
I have more time than money, and they have more money than time. So our group effort gardening works for both families :)
We a total of four freezers between both houses last year....mostly tomato products....

This years grow of all types of plants will be several 4-5 times as big.
Last year was to see if it was possible, and this year is to see how well the carefully chosen varieties of food crops do. (almost everything but the peppers are varieties of crops that supposedly grow well in hot weather)
Well....and.....then....there is my goal to go crazy with my love of hot peppers...lol

Ok, got the current round of hooks into cups...including...
Canadian Express Red Bhuts (27 of em now)
Ed's Red Bhuts
Pepperlover Red Bhuts
White Bhuts
Purple Bhuts
Orange Bhits
White Habaneros
Jalapenos
Red BrainStrains
Yellow BrainStrains
Mini Bells (sweet)
Corno di Giallo (sweet)
Chinese Giant (sweet)

Now I just need to sow the AjiJoe Surprise Hot Mix seeds, and I can go to bed knowing all today's hooks are in cups of soil, and more importantly, that I have sown all the seeds I have gotten my hands on...lol (well, most of them anyway)
I am pretty sure that pepper sowing is now done for the season :)

Now I just need to transplant into cups when they germ, prepare the garden spots, put in some more water lines, plant everything in the ground, sow all the other food crops.....and....water it all.....and....watch it grow :)

Hahahaha, I thought this place was peppers anonymous.....oh wait.... This is "pepper enablers"

We did can some stuff last year...pepper jelly and pickled peppers.
Probably do more this year.
But I think I will dry as much as possible.
Oh, and I am going to have to figure out how to make sauces and bottle them for later use too.

Quick update, tonight before bed I need to transplant a few things from germ trays to cups of soil....
Including:
Canadian Express Miracle Red Bhuts (Miracle, because I never thought they would be viable, and there must be 50 now)
Pepperlover Red Bhuts
Red Savina (woohoo first one hooked!)
White Habaneros
Scotch Bonnets
Bolivian Rainbow (first one hooked)
Jalapenos
White Bhut
Indian Carbon Bhuts
Yellow Bhuts
Yellow BrainStrain

Yep, the 1,000+ mark must be getting close....I'll have to go count them tomorrow to find out and be sure :)our
Although I might actually be at around 850-875 or so....

Whoa those are some serious numbers! I don't blame you, if I had more land I'd be all over a large crop. Hat’s off mon \o_

Thank you!

We went from maybe 50 pepper plants, sweets and hots, to whatever I end up with this year after my crazy seed sowing mania.
Last year was truly a joint effort with the neighbor family, and an experiment to see if gardening here was even worth it. Well, it was :)
So this year, our family, and theirs, will collaborate again, but on a much larger scale :)
And a much larger variety of food crops.
Especially Peppers!!! Woohoo!!! And since there are only 3 people out of 9 that will even touch a habanero, I should have plenty of the hot stuff made into sauce, flakes and powder, to last a long long time :) Not to mention frozen pods, and plants I will bring inside under lights to try and get winter fresh pods from.

Oh, Ramon, I have been reading through your glog....only on page 4 so far.
I'm enjoying your grow too :)

Here is an updated alphabetized (sort of) Growlist :)
87 Varieties/Strains of Hots (Maybe 8 varieties have not germinated yet, and A couple likely won't germinate ever, so list will shrink slightly)

Not quite as many as you but i have to do tha same with some Thai Fires and a Fatalli that either sprouted 2 plants or I double planted in the pot

Awesome!

I have to multiple plant them....for protection from wind and sun.
Shoot, I Borg Sowed some stuff where there are up to 10 seedlings in one 20oz cup...LOL
(Borg Sowing = Carpet Bombing = Sowing Numerous Seeds In One Jiffy Pellet)

I generally sow 1-3 seeds in a pellet, but some got 5, and some got 10-15

I normally sow 1 to 3 seeds like you but rather than pellet's I use eggs, lols. I will have to give Carl's Borg sowing technique soon, I got a great laugh out of that conversation in his glog ...

I was reading your egg technique, pure genius!!!

I am convinced it works....there are some seeds where I was not sure they would germinate.
Such as pods from farmers market, dried store pods etc....
Every single borg style sowing resulted in borg style germinating! LOL

Even the pequin seeds from pods that may have been smoked, germinated using the borg sowing technique :)

Just for Shane...updated total....LOL

Transplanted the days hooks (22) into cups tonight, and.....
9 more hot pepper hooks, since the last count update, brings it up to 949

Not far to go now to reach 1000......
