What tomatoes are you growing? 2015

BamsBBQ, just an FYI if you haven't grown Yellow Pear or Black Cherry before, both of those plants can easily get over 9 ft tall, so you'll want to stake them well.   Noah Yates, good list there.  I'm growing Oxheart Giantissimo which could very well be the same variety as your Giant Oxheart...

How many tomatoes in a 4x8 raised bed ??

Ok, excellent! It sounds like you're on your way.  You might take photos of your set-up and document a little or a lot throughout the season. I find note-taking to be extremely useful so I don't have to re-invent the wheel every year.

    2015 Plant out date

The first week of June is usually how it goes with the peppers.  Even if the temperatures cooperated better, there are far too many other things going into the garden around that time to push up the date.

    Garden Destroyed

Aw, OldSalty, what a heart-wrenching story!  On the other hand, what an amazing outpouring of love and kindness! I always have extra tomato plants but I can't ship across the border. While it won't help this season, I can send you some seeds of just about any tomato you'd ever want. PM me a...

How many tomatoes in a 4x8 raised bed ??

If you are able to work on all sides of the bed you've made, I would put 8 indeterminate (tall) tomato plants in there, placing them in 2 rows of 4 with the 8 ft stakes that they'll need pounded in at the edges of the bed and the tomatoes placed right against them inside the bed, if that makes...

    Hardening Off Question

For what it's worth, my husband is the pepper grower and here in Toronto zone 5b, he doesn't start putting his peppers outside to harden off until the 3rd week of May when I'm transplanting my tomatoes.  Peppers and Eggplants are more tender than tomatoes and are more susceptible to growth...

What tomatoes are you growing? 2015

Roguejim-   Brimmer is a regular-leaf pink beefsteak and Old Brooks is a red canner type.   Ok campers, here's the list.  Everybody got potted up yesterday and for the first time ever, I managed (purely accidentally, I assure you) to grow enough extras to accommodate the ones that didn't...

What tomatoes are you growing? 2015

D3monic, in Illinois, you should be the same zone as me, 5a or 5b so any of the Brandywines should do nicely for amazing BLTs.  I would not use them for salsa - try instead varieties that are described as "paste" tomatoes with few seeds and very little juice.  Tomatoes such as those are designed...

What tomatoes are you growing? 2015

DownRiver, hey, good to see you! Oh I'd love to get together a pepper for tomato trade with you.  Duane still uses your seeds with good germination, you should be happy to know!  Craig's been holding out on us.  He's really got some talent with the pen.  I found his book eminently readable and...

What tomatoes are you growing? 2015

Ciao all-   I got Craig LeHoullier's book, Epic Tomatoes, for Christmas.  He's inspired me to dig through the binders and pull out those TRUE heirlooms, the old ones, the ones that our parents and grandparents grew.  I haven't come up with a list yet, but I'm going to start with the Livingston...

favorite What is your favorite pepper in terms of taste (doesn't need to be super hot)?

I like this thread.  I do most of the cooking and gardening here at home, but Duane's starting to really get a feel for the timing of meals and has made a few on his own (not always on time, but he's improving there).  If I had to pick just one pepper that he grows, I'd pick one that I can't...

wanted Canadian seed train P.R.O.J.E.C.T. ROUND 4 (looking for more members)

Wow, you guys! I'm so glad there's finally been a successful Canadian Seed Train after so much trying! Duane just started his peppers last weekend and I'm only just getting back here, which is too bad for him.  I'm seeing ots of amazing varieties, not just scorchers.  I hope you guys decide to...

    recipe-help Spicy Thanksgiving Recipes

Ciao all- It's almost time for American Thanksgiving and since all of you love your spicy food, I thought I'd ask for some inspirational spicy twisted Thanksgiving recipes instead of the normal English-based tradition, which lacks any spice at all. What are your favourites?

The THP Compendium of Filipino Cuisine

Ciao Franz- Thank you SO much for posting these recipes for some of my very favourite Filipino foods. I also have a recipe request for your favourite Pancit, preferably something your family makes and was handed down (if Mom doesn't mind, of course). Those heirloom recipes are the BEST...
