We are a Mac family all the way.

not if you game on the pc lol... or run civil 3d.

Always Apple. Boot Camp when slummin' ...
queequeg152
queequeg152
c3d is already unstable enough... no way it would run virtually.
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
Probably runs better on the Mac.
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
PS - it's not virtual.
queequeg152
queequeg152
Oh is that a dual boot thing?
queequeg152
queequeg152
do they even sell macs with workstation gpus?
grantmichaels

You can go further these days with a Mac homie, Thunderbolt-attached, external GPU's. I use them for 3D SfM work. Of course, you can also just fire up massive GPU-servers on AWS, too.
queequeg152
queequeg152
wtf is 3d sfm? when i google that all i get is animated porn.
queequeg152
queequeg152
structure from motion? that sounds cool... what do you do with that?
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
Yeah ...

Granite statue work. Walk around small one's with a GoPro, or fly around the drone around the big one's, and then digitize it using SfM.
queequeg152
queequeg152
wow thats cool... can you reproduce the geometry just from video? sounds like it would not be terribly accurate to me.
queequeg152
queequeg152
i mean for like machining... not for like what ever... video games.
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
Yes, and it's close enough for baseball. The most work is in the post-processing toolchain to compensate for the spherical aberation of the GoPro - which is hardly rectinlinear. When I use the DSLR (5D+17L T/S), it's much better, because that lens balls in terms of being much more rectilinear-like. And I have some parlor tricks.
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
I am like the SfM whisperer at this point, really. Clean up the mesh in Meshlab and Blender, and get it run on an Breton ShapeMill. BOOM.
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
When there price-point on drone's that can reliably carry a 5D and a heavy-ass lens comes around, it'll be tits.
queequeg152
queequeg152
so you can machine stone statues with this tech? thats pimp as f**k.

how does the camera track its point of origin? little marker stickers or something?
grantmichaels
grantmichaels
the system we use for regular work uses marker-points like you mention, but SfM uses the relation between the pictures, it's all relative.
