    Remove the dirt?

Not sure if I should post this here or in Grow Tech.   I have some seedlings I got from a local nursery that I want to put in 5 gallon pots for a non-circulating hydroponic grow using coco coir as my medium.  Is there any need or benefit to removing/rinsing off the potting soil the seedlings...

    seeds Transfering Seedlings

Thanks for the advice.  I will likely go middle of the road, cutting as much as I can to remove the net pot/bottle without damaging the roots, hopefully allowing fo them to grow relatively unrestricted after tranplanting.

    seeds Transfering Seedlings

Hi, I have gotten quite a few seedlings started indoors, soon to be moved outdoors.  I used a couple of self watering wicking systems, based on the advice of Peter S and his YouTube videos such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV35YliqOWw&index=5&list=PLx7XtYIVCogT44CB1KEX6CXjtFJI9L8QJ  and...

    5 gallon wick systems comparison

Thanks for the update.  Despite the somewhat lessor pod size and the likelihood that the traditional self-watering system will ultimately be the winner, I have to say I am liking the wick system.  My own self-watering systems seem to be taking their sweet time to bear ripe fruit and I am running...

    sun Too much sun/heat?

Thanks for the advice.  I am pretty sure water is not a problem as most of my plants are in self-watering 5 gallon double buckets.  Will try to move them around a bit.  The problem is, I'm very lazy, hence the self-watering system.  :D

    sun Too much sun/heat?

Been going through some pretty hot sunny days here in Northern Virginia.  Some of my plants look pretty pathetic at high noon, like this one:     But it always seems to bounce back.  It looked like this a few hours later after a shower (I also moved it):     So my question is whether I am...

    5 gallon wick systems comparison

Thanks for the update, my takeaway at this point is it's pretty much splitting hairs as to one being significantly better than the other.  A couple of questions, though:   1.  Are the two plants clones, or seedlings from different seeds?  If not, my guess (and given my vast ignorance, it's a...

    5 gallon wick systems comparison

How about an update? :P   I'm very curious about this comparison since it seems that, assuming the wicking system provides at least an equivalent size plant and pepper yield, its obvious advantage is that it requires far less soil/medium than the traditional method.  I have about ten...

    Paint them black?

Thanks for the reply, I did hear about using foil as an alternative to painting the buckets.  I guess my question should have been, how important is it to block sunlight from the water reservoir?  Is the effort justified?  Does it depend on how fast the plant uses the water?

    Paint them black?

I have a few self watering 5-gallon buckets going.  I am using pickle buckets from Firehouse Subs, a solid red.  Is it necessary to paint the bottoms to limit algea growth?

    Please diagnose this ailment

Plenty of sun, and am being careful not to overwater, but we have had a lot of rain these past few weeks so the pot has not really dried out.  I did re-pot it to a mix that did not have such a high concentration of compost.  Will try an Epsom salt spray today.   Thanks for the advice.

    Please diagnose this ailment

Brought a nice apparently healthy plant (Dragon Pepper) from a local nursery.  Couple of weeks after potting in a 5 gallon, there is not much new growth and the leaves are tinging yellow to black on the edges.  Almost like it looks "burnt."       Any idea what the problem is?  Thinking the...

    Double shredded hardwood mulch?

The reason I tried the 2x shredded is the nursery guy told me container gardeners in the UK are moving away from using peat in a big way because of price and scarcity, and using shredded bark.  I need to go back to see if I understood correctly and whether the hardwood was (is) something that...

    Double shredded hardwood mulch?

Thanks for the replies, looks like I had better do some re-potting.  Luckily I only used it in two or three buckets.  ShowMeDaSauce, the place you linked to on Lee Hywy is reasonably close, will take a drive there if I can't get something closer, thanks.   Still pretty new at this, trying to go...

    Double shredded hardwood mulch?

Anyone use this as a additive to a potting mix?  It was recommended by someone at the nursery I frequent to help with water retention but I am concerned that as a hardwood as opposed to pine, it won't break down much.  Curious if anyone uses it.   Thanks in advance.

organic Jobes water soluble organic fert

At Walmart just picked up several bags of Espoma Plant Tone and Tomato Tone for $2.50 an 8lb bag.  They had tons of it.  I was looking for the Jobes, which I cleared out of another store yesterday for $1.50 per 4lb bag.  Found more Jobes but the Espoma is a better deal.  But boy, that stuff stinks!
